About the Event
Adventures by the Book™ is excited to continue our expansion into Palos Verdes with an Exclusive German Adventure with the first German author to ever become a #1 New York Times bestseller, Bernhard Schlink. You do not want to miss this very special opportunity to meet this world renowned author, who is visiting the West Coast all the way from Germany.
In 1997 Schlink's novel, The Reader, was published to great acclaim and later turned into an Academy Award winning film starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes. This internationally bestselling and award-winning novel made Bernhard Schlink one of the most well respected German authors in modern history. Now in 2017, Schlink is back with a book that will thrill his fans: The Woman on the Stairs is a powerful novel about obsession, creativity, and love.
Join us for an exclusive evening (only 30 spaces available!) for the opportunity to intimately meet and mingle with this internationally acclaimed author. In the beautiful private residence of Katrin Cooper, we will be treated to food and beverage while Schlink speaks on how he was inspired to bring together a missing painting, a mysterious woman, her husband, and a lover in one intricate and poignant book. Not only will guests leave this event with a signed copy of The Woman on the Stairs, they will also part with a unique personal understanding of the man behind one of the most acclaimed modern German literary works.
We want to extend a special thanks to our German host, Katrin Cooper, a Los Angeles base Fine art photographer, story teller, traveler, and adventurer. Her work is represented in local retail stores and restaurants, and owned by private collectors in the US and Germany. At the end of this magnificent evening, one lucky guest will leave with an original work, donated for raffle at this event by Katrin, KC Photography: katrincooperphotography.com
Your Adventure includes food & beverage, a First Edition hardcover copy of A Woman on the Stairs, author talk, book signing, and the chance to meet the author up-close and personal in an authentic and unique setting.
About the Author and Book
In his latest novel, The Woman on the Stairs, a brilliant and naïve young lawyer’s life is changed forever when a painter and his subject—a breathtakingly beautiful woman—appear at his office in Frankfurt. The woman’s husband is deliberately marring the painting of his wife he commissioned the artist to make. Now the woman and the artist want the painting back. Simple enough—or so it seems before the lawyer becomes enmeshed in the lives of this toxic trio. Love, theft, and deceit unfold in quick succession when the woman, and the painting, suddenly go missing. It will take a strange turn of fate and a natural disaster to reunite the lawyer, the husband, and the artist with the woman they all love, hiding out in Australia—and when they find her they will be forced to reckon with the lies and betrayals of their shared past. This is an intricately crafted, poignant, and beguiling novel—it is Bernhard Schlink writing at his peak.
