About the Book and Author
In 2010, Jenifer Ringer, principal dancer at The New York City Ballet, received national media attention dubbed "Sugarplumgate" when a New York Times dance critic criticized her body weight rather than her dancing in a review.Ringer appeared on both Oprah ("Real Life Black Swan") and Good Morning America ("Are Dance Critic's Remarks en Pointe?") to address the evolving discussion of body weight and body image in the dance world, while reflecting on her own history with eating disorders and her experiences coming back to work as a dancer after having a baby. Dancing Through It (Viking: February 2014) is Ringer's remarkably candid, uplifting, and funny memoir of her journey to becoming a professional dancer and the story of her 23 years as a dancer at the New York City Ballet. it is also a meditation on body image and how it affects our identity and self-esteem.
