About the Event
About the AuthorsEach of our fabulous authors are donating their time to this cause and to the country that they inspired them. In September 2015, Susan and a group of Adventurers traveled to Paris & Provence, France for an Adventure by the Book. The trip followed Susan's novel Lisette's List which she says, "... grew from [her] deep love for France, for the French language, for French art, for Provence, and for the French people who have suffered unspeakably during war and its aftermath and whom [she has] found to be gracious lovers of beauty." Jennifer Coburn is a USA Today best selling author of six novels and contributor to four literary anthologies. Over the past two decades, Coburn has received numerous awards from the Press Club and Society for Professional Journalists for articles that appeared in Mothering, Big Apple Baby, The Miami Herald, The San Diego Union-Tribune and dozens of national and regional publications. Jennifer’s first memoir is entitled We’ll Always Have Paris; she like many of us, fell in love with the City of Light upon visiting. Jennifer, in conjunction with Susan McBeth, expressed her feeling of hopelessness in not being able to help the people of the city she loves, and so the idea for this Je Suis Paris Fundraising Adventure was born. Mary Duncan, a native San Diegan, splits her time between her home state of California and Paris, France. In searching for her identity, she has traveled to numerous countries and prefers to be where there is action, diversity and controversy. A fascination with the worlds of Henry Miller, Simone de Beauvoir, Colette and other writers helped lead her to write her memoir Henry Miller is Under My Bed: People and Places on the Way to Paris. Mary is also the founder of the Shakespeare and Company Bookstore Moscow. She is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur, California and is is a patron of the Shakespeare and Company Literary Festival. In 2008, she founded the Paris Writers Group. She also writes for the Huffington Post and in between her writing and travels, she continues to live in Paris. Bernard Guillas, Maitre Cuisiniers de France and Award-winning chef, joined La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Inc. as executive chef in June 1994. He began his formal training in 1978, at Le Bretagne Restaurant in Questembert, France, where he apprenticed with the legendary Georges Paineau. In 1989 he relocated to La Jolla, Ca, where he felt right at home, for the coastal lifestyle reminded him of his home in Brittany. In 2001, Bernard was inducted into the International Restaurant & Hospitality Rating Bureau’s American Chefs’ Hall of Fame; he is one of only fourteen chefs to receive this honor. Chef Bernard has added and self published his first cookbook, Flying Pans, with co-author and chef de cuisine of the Marine Room, Ron Oliver, to his already impressive resume. Flying Pans was awarded two IACP book of the year awards in the categories of Chefs and Restaurants and the coveted People’s Choice. Bernard is regularly featured on local and national networks including the KTLA morning show in Los Angeles, including several appearances on The Today Show. Chef Bernard Guillas continues to infuse the local culinary scene with his unique talent and engaging personality. Amy Finley is a cook and writer who was the winner of the third season of The Next Food Network Star. Her program, The Gourmet Next Door aired for six episodes before Finley, citing a family crisis, cancelled further episodes and moved with her husband and children to a rural farm in Burgundy, France, an episode she chronicles in her memoir, How to Eat a Small Country.
Juliette Sobanet is the award-winning author of five Paris-based romance and mystery novels, four short stories, and an upcoming memoir titled Meet Me in Paris. Her books have hit the Top 100 Bestseller Lists on Amazon US, UK, France, and Germany. A former French professor, Juliette holds a B.A. from Georgetown University and an M.A. from New York University in Paris. She is admittedly obsessed with Paris, and she plans to continue whisking her characters (and herself) away to the City of Light for the rest of her days.
