About the Event
Adventures by the Book™ is honored to partner with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Diego State University for a Someday Bird Watching Edventure at Mission Trails Regional Park with author, Sally J. Pla.
Bird watching has been a recognized hobby for over a century, growing in popularity as more and more species of birds have been identified and observed. Regional Parks of San Diego are fantastic birding spots to see a large variety of both long and short term migratory birds and year round residents. Birds such as Townsends Warblers and Western Tanagers may only be in the region for a few days, whereas Yellow-Breasted Chats, Yellow-Rumped Warblers, and Bullock’s Orioles are long term residents. Join us on a fascinating bird watching walk at"the third jewel of San Diego's park system", Mission Trails.
In her novel, The Someday Birds, Sally J. Pla’s main character, Charlie, uses bird watching as a technique to survive a cross-country road trip from California to Virginia with his boy-crazy sister, unruly brothers, and a mysterious new family friend. Charlie’s perfectly ordinary life has been unraveling ever since his war journalist father was injured in Afghanistan. He decides that if he can spot all the birds that he and his father were hoping to see someday along the way, then everything might just turn out okay. The Someday Birds is a tale that is equal parts madcap road trip, coming-of-age story for an autistic boy who feels he doesn’t understand the world, and an uplifting portrait of a family overcoming a crisis.
Your Edventure includes an guided bird walk at Mission Trails, signed copy of The Someday Birds, author talk, book discussion, Q&A, book signing, and the opportunity to meet the author up close and personal in a fun and authentic setting.
About the Author & Book
Sally J. Pla has been a desk clerk at a creaky old hotel, a very forgetful waitress, and a terrible back-up singer for a local band. But she’s always loved writing the best. She has worked as a business journalist and in public education. She has three sons, a husband, and an enormous, fluffy dog, and lives near lots of lemon trees in Southern California. The Someday Birds is her first novel.
The protagonist of The Someday Birds, Charlie, wishes his life could be as predictable and simple as chicken nuggets. And it usually is. He has his clean room, his carefully organized bird books and art supplies, his favorite foods, and comfortable routines. But life has been unraveling since his war journalist father was injured in Afghanistan. And when Dad gets sent from California to Virginia for further medical treatment, Charlie must travel cross-country to meet him. With his boy-crazy sister Davis, his unruly twin brothers, and the mysterious Ludmila at the wheel, this journey looks to be anything but smooth.
Charlie decides that if he can spot all the birds that he and his father had been hoping to see in the wild, someday, and show that list to Dad, then maybe, just maybe, things will turn out okay. Debut author Sally J. Pla has written a young person’s novel that is equal parts madcap road trip, coming-of-age story for a highly unusual boy, and uplifting portrait of a family overcoming a crisis.
