About the Event
Adventures by the Book™ is delighted to work with Ticktocker Thrift Shop to host authors Reise Moore & Allison Engel for our fabulous Thrifty Shopper Adventure: an evening of budget fashion, books, and shopping.
Inspired by the question "What is personal style and where can I get some?", Reise Moore and Allison Engel wrote ThriftStyle as the must-have guide for bargain-hunting fashionistas looking to make a statement. Join us at TickTocker Thrift Shop with Reise & Allison who will share their inside tips on finding your perfect "Style ID".
Run by the Peninsula Chapter of the National Charity League, the TickTocker Thrift Shop will be the treasure trove our authors sift through to find the perfect outfit to prove you can be both thrifty & stylish. While we enjoy wine & heavy appetizers, Reise & Allison will offer tips on how to choose signature pieces at a thrift store and pair them to create the best look for you. This fun event will allow the audience to get a clear idea of the “do’s and don’ts” included in Thriftsytle and how to craft the best outfit for their personal fashion.
Your Adventure includes heavy appetizers, refreshments, a copy of ThriftStyle, tips on finding thrift shop treasures, author talk, book signing, and the chance to meet these fashionistas up-close and personal in an intimate and authentic setting.
About the Authors and Book
Allison Engel has written articles for Esquire, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and other publications. She holds a bachelor's degrees in textiles/clothing and journalism, helps run the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities, and regularly writes about LA's textile district and costume designers. She co-authored Food Finds: America's Best Local Foods and the People Who Produce Them (William Morrow Cookbooks) with her sister, Margaret Engel.
Shoppers will learn to navigate the racks of their local consignment shop, spot name brands like Versace, Dior, and Burberry, select the best quality items, and repair secondhand clothes that need some love. Photo-filled chapters on thrifted handbags, jewelry, scarves, and other accessories show what's available and give tips for distinguishing quality items from fakes. Interviews with expert tailors, dry cleaners, shoe repair wizards, and fabric-dyeing professionals explain what makes a damaged piece of clothing worth renovating. Before-and-after photos show what can be done to refashion less-than-perfect finds.
Please note that no physical tickets will be issued. Due to the special nature of this event, no refunds are available after October 20, 2017, or for no-shows. Only books pre-purchased below or at the event will be eligible for signing.
