About the Event
In January 2017, Sally J. Pla's debut book The Someday Birds will be released.
Sally and Adventures by the Book would like to extend an invitation to readers, children & adults alike, to come and join us for a unique book launch at the San Elijo Nature Center. Over appetizers and refreshments, we will gather to celebrate the release of this remarkable novel, which Sally describes as her "own neurodiverse heart-gift to kids who are different, kids put in tough situations, kids dragged into journeys they don’t want. It’s about self-acceptance, about learning how to feel more at ease in the world."
If you, like Sally's protagonist Charlie, adore birds then you will want to be sure to meet us for the start of this book launch at 1:15 pm, for a bird watching walk** led by a member of the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy, where there will be binoculars provided to the first 25 guests. As we stroll around the beautiful San Elijo Lagoon looking for the many diverse species of birds, the spirit of The Someday Birds will overtake you.
**For the bird watching walk, please keep in mind to wear comfortable walking shoes and to bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and binoculars (optional, but please note the supply from the Nature Center is limited). The walk will continue, rain or shine: in the event of rain, please dress accordingly in proper rain attire. The reception will be held inside a room within the Nature Center and will not be affected by weather.
At 2:15 pm we will return to the Nature Center to join the rest of the guests and gather for a reception in the upper story of the center, which boasts a spectacular view of the lagoon. As snacks, soft drinks, beer & wine are served, Sally Pla will introduce her beautiful book and host a book discussion, complete with a Q&A. Copies of the brand new novel will be available for purchase and signing at the event as well.
Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to get out in nature, support a wonderful debut author, and be one of the first to get your hands on The Someday Birds, a young adult novel that you will be recommending to all ages.
About the Author & Book
Sally J. Pla has been a desk clerk at a creaky old hotel, a very forgetful waitress, and a terrible back-up singer for a local band. But she’s always loved writing the best. She has worked as a business journalist and in public education. She has three sons, a husband, and an enormous, fluffy dog, and lives near lots of lemon trees in Southern California. The Someday Birds is her first novel.
The protagonist of The Someday Birds, Charlie, wishes his life could be as predictable and simple as chicken nuggets. And it usually is. He has his clean room, his carefully organized bird books and art supplies, his favorite foods, and comfortable routines. But life has been unraveling since his war journalist father was injured in Afghanistan. And when Dad gets sent from California to Virginia for further medical treatment, Charlie must travel cross-country to meet him. With his boy-crazy sister Davis, his unruly twin brothers, and the mysterious Ludmila at the wheel, this journey looks to be anything but smooth.
Charlie decides that if he can spot all the birds that he and his father had been hoping to see in the wild, someday, and show that list to Dad, then maybe, just maybe, things will turn out okay. Debut author Sally J. Pla has written a young person’s novel that is equal parts madcap road trip, coming-of-age story for a highly unusual boy, and uplifting portrait of a family overcoming a crisis
