About the EventAdventures by the Book is honored to partner with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Diego State University for a Culture & Cuisine of the Middle East Lunch Edventure with 2014 San Diego Book Award winner Layla Fiske, as she discusses her debut novel, The Fig Orchard. Event at Aladdin Mediterranean Cafe includes lunch, beverage, tax, gratuity, book discussion, Q&A, book signing, and the opportunity to meet the author up close and personal in an intimate and authentic setting.
Isolated, tradition-bound villages such as those high above the Jordan River have been particularly vulnerable in history to invaders. How many families have been affected by such acts of aggression, but were never able to tell their stories? Join author Layla Fiske over an authentic Middle Eastern lunch as she shares one particular story that has not been lost. Her award-winning debut novel, The Fig Orchard, is the deeply moving story of her own grandmother, who experienced firsthand the tragedy of the Turkish invasion of her homeland.
Her first novel recently won the coveted San Diego Geisel (Best of the Best) Book Award, as well as a Silver Award in the Benjamin Franklin Awards for Historical Fiction, and was also listed as one of the best books of 2014 by Kirkus Reviews.
