ThriftStyle Free Library Adventure

January 20, 2018 @ 2:00 pm PST

in partnership with The Carlsbad City Library

About the Event

Adventures by the Book is pleased to partner with the Carlsbad City Library and Community Resource Center Resale Stores for a Free Library Adventure with bargain fashionistas, Reise Moore & Allison Engel.

Inspired by the question “What is personal style and where can I get some?”, Reise Moore and Allison Engel wrote ThriftStyle as the must-have guide for bargain-hunting fashionistas looking to make a statement. Join us at the Carlsbad City Library with Reise & Allison who will share their inside tips on finding your perfect “Style ID”.

During this event, these bargain shoppers will show the audience perfect way to sift through a shop to find hidden treasures that will create an outfit that is both thrifty & stylish. Joined by the CRC Resale Stores of North County, these ladies will demonstrate to the audience the perfect way to style a thrift shop find, based on real outfits brought in from the CRC stores! This fun event will allow the audience to get a clear idea of the “do’s and don’ts” included in Thriftsytle and how to craft the best outfit for their personal fashion.

This free Adventure includes a book discussion, fashion tips, outfit preview from the CRC Thrift Shop, Q&A, book signing, and the opportunity to meet the author up close and personal.

About the Author and Book

Television producer Reise Moore is a thrift-store fanatic. What started out ten years ago as a begrudging trip to a thrift store swiftly became a passion for quality, beautiful, and unique clothes at rock-bottom prices. She lives in Los Angeles.

Allison Engel has written articles for Esquire, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and other publications. She holds a bachelor’s degrees in textiles/clothing and journalism, helps run the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities, and regularly writes about LA’s textile district and costume designers. She co-authored Food Finds: America’s Best Local Foods and the People Who Produce Them (William Morrow Cookbooks) with her sister, Margaret Engel.
Thrift Style: A must-have guide for bargain-hunting fashionistas looking to make a statement without sabotaging their budgets. With this easy-to-use resource, savvy shoppers can cultivate upscale, upcycled wardrobes at thrift and consignment store prices.
Shoppers will learn to navigate the racks of their local consignment shop, spot name brands like Versace, Dior, and Burberry, select the best quality items, and repair secondhand clothes that need some love. Photo-filled chapters on thrifted handbags, jewelry, scarves, and other accessories show what’s available and give tips for distinguishing quality items from fakes. Interviews with expert tailors, dry cleaners, shoe repair wizards, and fabric-dyeing professionals explain what makes a damaged piece of clothing worth renovating. Before-and-after photos show what can be done to refashion less-than-perfect finds.

About the Community Resource Center (CRC)

After seeing so many in need in the community, a group of community and business leaders came together to form an organization addressing the homelessness and food issues in the community, forming Community Resource Center. Established in 1979, CRC has grown from providing basic needs for families in crisis, to offering extensive programs that facilitate the safety, stability, and self-sufficiency of low-income and episodically homeless households – including domestic violence (DV) victims.Save
