About the Event
In the spring of 2007, hard on the heels of the worst winter in the history of Juneau, Alaska, Lynn Schooler finds himself facing the far side of middle age and exhausted by laboring to handcraft a home as his marriage slips away. Seeking solace and escape in nature, he sets out on a solo journey into the Alaskan wilderness, traveling first by small boat across the formidable Gulf of Alaska, then on foot along one of the wildest coastlines in North America.
Walking Home is filled with stunning observations of the natural world, and rife with nail-biting adventure as Schooler fords swollen rivers and eludes aggressive grizzlies.
Join Lynn, as he shares stories from his forty-plus years as a renowned Alaskan wilderness guide, acclaimed photographer, and award-winning author.
About the Author
Internationally-renowned wilderness guide, explorer, photographer, and award-winning author Lynn Schooler has lived in Alaska for most of his life. Working as a fisherman, photographer, and wilderness guide, it is the latter occupation that ultimately led to his first book, The Blue Bear, a homage to his dear friend Michio Hoshino, a renowned Japanese photographer who was killed on a photo shoot in Alaska by a grizzly bear.
His second memoir, Walking Home: A Traveler in the Alaskan Wilderness, records his 2007 solo hike through the coastal regions of southeastern Alaska, while being stalked by a deranged bear. Lynn’s photographs have been exhibited world-wide, and his talk will include a slide-show presentation.
Each year Lynn takes us on an Alaskan Wilderness Adventure by the Book, where he invites us to stay in his home for six days and takes us on invigorating explorations across the stunning Alaskan outdoors.
