About the Event
Adventures by the Book ™ is a proud supporter of universities across San Diego and is excited to partner with the University of California at Irivine (UCI), University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU) to bring the #1 New York Times bestselling German author, Bernhard Schlink, to their campuses.
In 1997 Schlink's novel, The Reader, a story of love and secrets, horror and compassion, unfolding against the haunted landscape of postwar Germany, was published to great acclaim. This internationally bestselling and award-winning novel made Bernhard Schlink one of the most well respected German authors in modern history. Now in 2017, Schlink is back with a novel to thrill his fans: The Woman on the Stairs is a powerful novel about obsession, creativity, and love.
Don't miss the opportunity to attend an educational talk by Schlink to learn more about his writing process and how history has affected his works. Both UCSD and SDSU's campuses will be hosting lecture-style events and encourage faculty, students, and the public, particularly those interested in German literature, to join them for this splendid opportunity to hear from a world renowned author.
These University Adventures will include an author talk, Q&A with the author, and book signing.
About the Author and Book
In his latest novel, The Woman on the Stairs, a brilliant and naïve young lawyer’s life is changed forever when a painter and his subject—a breathtakingly beautiful woman—appear at his office in Frankfurt. The woman’s husband is deliberately marring the painting of his wife he commissioned the artist to make. Now the woman and the artist want the painting back. Simple enough—or so it seems before the lawyer becomes enmeshed in the lives of this toxic trio. Love, theft, and deceit unfold in quick succession when the woman, and the painting, suddenly go missing. It will take a strange turn of fate and a natural disaster to reunite the lawyer, the husband, and the artist with the woman they all love, hiding out in Australia—and when they find her they will be forced to reckon with the lies and betrayals of their shared past. This is an intricately crafted, poignant, and beguiling novel—it is Bernhard Schlink writing at his peak.
