A Muslim Cultural Adventure

December 3, 2018 @ 6:30 pm PST

About the Event

We invite you to join us for a special Muslim Cultural Adventure, an intriguing dinner event with critically acclaimed journalist and debut author Huda Al-Marashi, to celebrate her debut memoir, First Comes Marriage.

While enjoying a delicious, authentic Middle Eastern dinner at one of San Diego’s premiere Mediterranean restaurants, Sufi Mediterranean Cuisine, Huda will share the unique story behind her traditional Muslim marriage, which will include a fascinating slide show of wedding photos, and an exclusive display of some of her wedding memorabilia.

Was this an arranged marriage? What is Muslim life in America? How does one blend Iraqi culture into life in America? What is a Muslim wedding like? Join us as Huda answers these questions and more. Understanding other cultures is the first step towards acceptance, so come to our Adventure with an appetite, questions, and a thirst for greater understanding.

Your Adventure includes a buffet dinner of authentic Middle Eastern food, a soft beverage, dessert, tax, gratuity, exclusive author presentation and displays, Q&A, book signing, and the chance to meet the author up-close and personal in an authentic and intimate setting.

About the Author and Book

Huda Al-Marashi is the author of the forthcoming memoir First Comes Marriage: My Not-So-Typical American Love Story. Excerpts from this memoir have appeared in the anthologies Love Inshallah: The Secret Love Lives of Muslim American Women, Becoming: What Makes a Woman, and Beyond Belief: The Secret Lives of Women and Extreme Religion. Other works have appeared in the Washington Post, the LA Times, al Jazeera, VIDA Review, Refinery 29, the Rumpus, and the Offing. She is the recipient of a Cuyahoga County Creative Workforce Fellowship and an Aspen Summer Words Emerging Writer Fellowship.

Tender, honest, and irresistibly compelling, First Comes Marriage is the first Muslim-American memoir dedicated to the themes of love and sexuality. Huda and Hadi’s story brilliantly circles around a series of firsts, chronicling two virgins moving through their first everything: hand holding, first kiss, and first sexual encounters. It’s an almost unbearably humanizing tale that tucks into our hearts and lingers in our imagination, while also challenging long-standing taboos within the Muslim community and the romantic stereotypes we unknowingly carry within us that sabotage some of our best chances for finding true love.

About the Venue:

Sufi Mediterranean Cuisine is delighted to serve the San Diego with authentic Persian cuisine. Traditional instrumental Iranian music is played lightly throughout the restaurant, allowing customers to be introduced to a small but significant part of the beautiful Persian culture. Paintings displaying people, places, and designs pertaining to the Iranian culture. Samovars, traditional pots used to boil water and brew aromatic Persian tea, are placed behind the bar. Many customers sit at the bar and enjoy the traditional hot tea and other drinks while socializing. Sufi’s delicious kabobs are freshly prepared daily and cooked right before your eyes on our open-fire grill.
