What does it take to get an agent interested, keep them interested, and make the most of your relationship? In this workshop you’ll get a soup-to-nuts look at the publishing process that starts with getting an agent. You will get expert tips, from a seasoned literary agent, about how to search for your own perfect agent and learn what an agent does for authors. In addition, your instructor will teach you how to get an agent’s attention through a polished and ready submission and how to navigate the process of working successfully with an agent.
Join Jill Marr, an agent at the elite Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency, for this informative and hands-on workshop. With nearly 15 years of publishing experience, Jill knows the ins and outs of what it takes to work with a literary agent successfully. She has written features and ads for Pages, the literary magazine for people who love books, and continues to write book ads for publishing houses, magazine pieces, and promotional features for television.
Prior to the Event (Deadline: March 5) - Query Letter Review
Prior to this workshop, authors may send a sample query letter to Jill for review**. She will critique your letter as a literary agent, giving input on how to make your letter more appealing to agents. During the workshop, authors will also have the option to read their query letter out loud and have Jill critique it in person so that all AuthorPreneurs™ in attendance can benefit from her expert advice.
**Submission information for query letter will be provided upon registration. Letters received after March 5 will not be eligible for the in-depth review prior to the event. If you register after the deadline, you may still bring your letter to the workshop, where it can be critiqued during the read-aloud session.
1:00pm-3:00pm - Creating and Maintaining a Relationship with Your Literary Agent
During the first half of this workshop you will learn how to find the perfect literary agent, and then what to expect once that agent goes to work for you, from the editorial expectations they may have before you even take the project to market, to the agent's submission process once your project is ready to send to editors. Jill will also discuss how the negotiation process works once there is an offer, contract evaluations, and finding a perfect publishing home.
3:00pm-5:00pm - Writing an Effective & Successful Query Letter
For the second half of the workshop Jill will work with you to evaluate and refine your all-important, but often daunting query letter. During the workshop she will use class examples of queries that do and don’t work, and provide feedback specific to the query letters you submitted prior to the workshop. You will learn how you can improve your letter and get an agent to request your project.
You will leave this workshop with a clear plan for obtaining and working with a literary agent, as well as, a polished query letter, ready to submit.
About the Speaker
Jill Marr graduated from San Diego State University with a BA in English with an emphasis in creative writing and a minor in history. She has a strong Internet and media background and nearly 15 years of publishing experience.
Jill is interested in commercial fiction, with an emphasis on mysteries, thrillers, romantic suspense and horror, women's commercial fiction and historical fiction. She is also looking for non-fiction by authors who are getting their work published regularly and who have a realistic sense of the market and their audience. Jill is looking for non-fiction projects in the areas of history, sports, politics, current events, cookbooks, health & nutrition, pop culture, humor, music, and very select memoir.
