WHO AM I? WRITE BOOKS. I EDIT OTHER PEOPLE’S STORIES. I TEACH CREATIVE WRITING. AND I BAKE.

WRITE.   When We Were Ghouls, A Memoir of Ghost Stories  (University of Nebraska Press; March 1, 2018). My essays have been published in The Gettysburg ReviewThe Normal SchoolCountry Living and other national magazines and anthologies. My first novel MoonPies & Movie Stars was a Los Angeles Times bestseller.

(Amy’s Memoir recounts her journey to try to figure out what truly happened when she learns her parents are grave robbers and her memory is out of focus.  She excavates both their sojourn overseas and how her family was one-by-one sent away from her until she was left alone at the age of seven in Lagos, Nigeria.)

EDIT. I’ve helped scores of writers finish their books. I find that looking at 10, 20, or even 30 pages in a workshop is just not doing a book justice. I prefer to work with students’ entire manuscript. Want a set of eyes to look yours over? Contact me for more info on how to submit.

TEACH.  I am the Associate Director of the New York State Summer Writers Institute in Saratoga Springs, NY. Fall, Winter and Spring, I teach creative writing classes at UCSD Extension, host a manuscript workshop with pie, and mentor Science and Engineering students on personal essays. Outside the classroom setting, I host Manuscript Workshops with guest of honor, David Ulin. We’ve been at it for over 5 years–memoir and novels accepted. David and I love the work and students have gone on from our workshop to get stellar agents and successful book deals.

BAKE. As a kid I was a chicken pot pie fanatic. Today I bake any kind of pie. If you can dream it, I will bake it. Savory Salons is my way of bringing pies and writing together. I host salons with authors and a small intimate guest list of folk with a conversation surrounding everyone that stems from the author’s latest work. If you want to be invited, let me know and I’ll put you on the list. Shall I whet your appetite? Salmon and portobello pie, carne asada pie in a cornmeal crust, and for dessert four-cherry pie or apple ginger pie. Pie, pie, pie.
