We are delighted to introduce a fun 2023 author series in partnership with the Point Loma Library, and we invite you to join us! Don’t miss the opportunity to meet five bestselling and fan-favorite authors, Joe Stillman, Kathi Diamant, Amy Wallen, Jennifer Coburn, and Kitty Morse.
Our part 2 episode features award-winning author and actress Kathi Diamant, as she discusses her book, Heart of the Zoo: How San Diego Zoo Director Chuck Bieler Earned His Stripes. Joining her in conversation will be Chuck Bieler, the subject of Kathie’s book, and Georgeanne Irvine, Director of Publishing, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

Part 2: Kathi Diamant
Kathi Diamant is an award-winning author, actor, broadcaster and adjunct professor at San Diego State University, where she leads the Kafka Project, the official international search to recover a lost literary treasure, the missing writings of Franz Kafka. Kathi’s award-winning book, Kafka’s Last Love: The Mystery of Dora Diamant has been reviewed by more than 60 publications and websites, internationally lauded for its original research and revelations into Dora and Kafka’s lives.
Her book, San Diego Zoo Heart of the Zoo: How San Diego Zoo Director Chuck Bieler Earned His Stripes, tells the extraordinary story of how Chuck Bieler “earned his stripes” at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. With inside stories and humorous details, it captures his tireless efforts to help create an international conservation organization where all wildlife thrives.
Chuck Bieler was executive director of the San Diego Zoo from 1972-1985, and as director emeritus has continued to work at the Zoo since then–at 53 years at the San Diego Zoo, he is its longest-serving employee. HEART OF THE ZOO is his story.
Native San Diego author Georgeanne “George” Irvine has devoted her career to raising awareness about animals and wildlife conservation. She is the director of publishing for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, where she has worked for more than four decades, as well as the author of more than two dozen children’s books about wildlife. Her worldwide expeditions have taken her to many of the wildest places on earth—from the jungles of Borneo and South America to the mountains of China and the forests of India to the Outback of Australia and the savannas of Africa.
Part 3: Amy Wallen
Amy Wallen is the San Diego-based author of When We Were Ghouls, A Memoir of Ghost Stories and the Los Angeles Times bestseller Moon Pies & Movie Stars. Her essays have been published in The Gettysburg Review, The Normal School, Country Living and other national magazines and anthologies.
Her book, How to Write a Novel in 20 Pies is a charming illustrated book on her journey writing a novel, some of her teaching experience, and some recipe-stories on pies, because it was through pie that she claims she survived novel writing.
Part 4: Jennifer Coburn
Jennifer Coburn is the author of the highly-anticipated historical novel, Cradles of the Reich, about three very different women living at a Nazi Lebensborn breeding home at the start of World War ll. Jennifer has also published a mother-daughter travel memoir, We’ll Always Have Paris, as well as six contemporary women’s novels. Additionally, Jennifer has contributed to five literary anthologies, including A Paris All Your Own.
When Jennifer is not going down historical research rabbit holes, she volunteers with So Say We All, a live storytelling organization, where she is a performer, producer, and performance coach. She is also an active volunteer with Reality Changers, a nonprofit that supports low-income high school students in becoming the first in their families to attend college. She specializes in college essay development, interview prep, and all-around tiger mothering.
Part 5: Kitty Morse
Kitty Morse is the author of ten cookbooks, including a memoir with recipes titled Mint Tea and Minarets: a Banquet of Moroccan Memories, named Best Book/Arab Cuisine by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. Other titles include Cooking at the Kasbah: Recipes from my Moroccan Kitchen (now in its tenth printing from Chronicle Books), The California Farm Cookbook, and Edible Flowers: A Kitchen Companion with Recipes.
Her 11th cookbook Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France — part Holocaust history, part memoir, part cookbook — features recipes from Kitty’s Alsatian ancestors, and is based upon original family documents and photographs chronicling living in Alsace during the Nazi occupation in WWII.

As this event is free and open to the public, no registration is required and seating is available on a first-come, first-served based. However, we encourage you to support each of the featured authors by pre-ordering a copy of the book below to be delivered to the event for signing. Additional copies will be available for sale at the event on a limited basis.
About the Point Loma/Hervey Library
One of the largest libraries in the City of San Diego, the Point Loma/Hervey Library offers many unique features and several conference rooms, a computer lab and media room. Fitting with Point Loma’s history as a fishing village, the library incorporates themes of marine life and nautical history throughout the two-story building.
