SUMMARY:The First\, the Few\, the Only: an ABTB Means Business Fireside Adventure with nFormation's Deepa Purushothaman and Fireside's Falon Fatemi
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nFor over ten years\, Adventures by the Book has been offering our signature one-of-a-kind\, multi-sensorial events and travels with authors. That’s because when it comes to connecting people and communities with books\, we mean business! \nAnd now\, we are taking that mission quite literally and are thrilled to welcome you to join the next in our new Adventures by the Book Means Business series\, offering you the opportunity to meet some of the greatest minds in the business world. \n \nAnd speaking of the greatest minds in business\, we are thrilled to celebrate the first day of Women’s History Month with Deepa Purushothaman\, co-founder of nFormation professional community for women of color\, as she discusses her inspiring new book\, The First\, the Few\, the Only\, with Fireside co-founder and CEO Falon Fatemi. \nHere is your chance to join the live conversation between Deepa and Falon\, on the exciting new platform that Falon co-founded\, to discuss The First\, the Few\, the Only.  Learn how to support their deeply personal call to action for women of color to find power from within and to join together in community. \nYour Adventure includes a hardcover copy of The First\, the Few\, the Only (with signed bookplate)\, tax\, shipping within the U.S. and Canada\, a live Fireside discussion with Deepa and Falon\, Q&A\, and the unique opportunity to converse live* with these brilliant creative artists and innovators. \n*Admission to this event is unique\, as Fireside is open by invite only. Simply purchase a book below and we will send you a private VIP link to attend the virtual event. Use your iPhone or iPad to chat live with the authors on the virtual stage; however\, or listen to the live broadcast on all other devices. Event access is provided via instructions emailed to you the week of the event. \n\n\nAbout the Author and Book\n \nDeepa Purushothaman is the author of The First\, The Few\, The Only: How Women of Color can Redefine Power in Corporate America and the co-founder of nFormation\, a company that provides a brave\, safe\, and new space for professionals who are women of color. \nPrior to this\, Deepa spent more than twenty years at Deloitte and was ‘a first’: an Indian American woman and one of the youngest people to make partner in the company’s history. In her time there\, she helped grow Deloitte’s Social Impact Practice\, served as a National Managing Partner of Inclusion\, and served as the Managing Partner of WIN—the firm’s renowned program to recruit\, retain\, and advance women. \nThe First\, The Few\, The Only is a deeply personal call to action for women of color to find power from within and to join together in community\, advocating for a new corporate environment where we all belong—and are accepted—on our own terms. \nWomen of color comprise one of the fastest-growing segments in the corporate workforce\, yet often we are underrepresented—among the first\, few\, or only ones in a department or company. For too long\, corporate structures\, social zeitgeist\, and cultural conditioning have left us feeling exhausted and downtrodden\, believing that in order to “fit in” and be successful\, we must hide or change who we are. \nAs a former senior partner at a large global services firm\, Deepa Purushothaman experienced these feelings of isolation and burnout. She met with hundreds of other women of color across industries and cultural backgrounds\, eager to hear about their unique and shared experiences. In doing so\, she has come to understand our collective setbacks—and the path forward in achieving our goals. \nBusiness must evolve—and women of color have the potential to lead that transformation. We must begin by pushing back against toxic messaging—including the things we tell ourselves—while embracing the valuable cultural viewpoints and experiences that give us unique perspectives at work. By fully realizing our own strengths\, we can build collective power and use it to confront microaggressions\, outdated norms\, and workplace misconceptions; create cultures where belonging is never conditional; and rework corporations to be genuinely inclusive to all. \n  \n\n\nAbout the Moderator\n\n\nFalon Fatemi co-founded interactive entertainment platform Fireside with Mark Cuban and Mike Ihbe. Previously she was the Founder of Node\, the first horizontal AI-as-a-service platform that enables users of business applications to see into the future by putting the power of prediction into third-party applications with 4 simple API calls. Node had raised $40M from top tier investors and was acquired by SugarCRM in Aug of 2020. \nIn September 2020\, Falon was listed as Fortune’s 40 under 40 as one of the most influential people in Technology: https://fortune.com/40-under-40/2020/falon-fatemi/. \nPreviously\, at age 19\, Falon was the youngest employee at Google and has spent over a decade focused on go-to-market strategy\, global expansion\, and strategic partnerships at Google\, YouTube\, and the startup world. \nIn her free time\, Falon writes a column for Forbes covering company building in Silicon Valley and how AI is impacting the future of work forbes.com/sites/falonfatemi/. In 2019 she was recognized as Goldman Sachs top 100 intriguing entrepreneurs and in Inc Magazine as a Science Pioneer in the top 100 Women Building America’s Most Innovative and Ambitious Businesses. \nIn 2018 she was recognized in Fast Company as one of the top 100 Most Creative People in Business and in SFBusiness Times as one of the 40 under 40 visionaries changing the bay area and the world. In 2017\, Falon was deemed “The Rainmaker” as one of the 50 women on Marie Claire’s New Guard list comprised of “female visionaries changing the world we live in.” She is also a contributor for Entrepreneur Magazine\, and has written articles for Wired\, Business Insider\, Fast Company\, Venturebeat\, Re/Code\, TechCrunch\, Huffington Post and more. \n\n  \n\nAbout Fireside\nWe are thrilled to announce that Adventures by the Book has been invited to host a literary series on Fireside which will include book discussions\, author talks\, book clubs\, special presentations\, and much more. \nDuring the course of WWII\, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted a series of “fireside chats” on the radio\, as a way to regularly communicate self-assurance and calm during times of despair and uncertainty in our country. While once a thing of the past\, thanks to the brilliant collaboration of billionaire entrepreneur and Shark Tank TV star\, Mark Cuban\, and Falon Fatemi\, former CEO and Founder of Node.ai\, Fireside chats are back\, bigger and better than ever\, and in a technological format that allows YOU to actively participate! \n \nFireside is the exclusive\, invite-only new podcast platform for the next generation – a socially responsible space for us to come together in real-time to collaborate and create meaningful conversations. Together\, we will engage in discussion\, debate\, and discourse in a public forum and make it a thing of celebration and beauty. SUMMARY:Smart Growth: an ABTB Means Business Fireside Adventure with CEO\, author\, and Top 50 business leader Whitney Johnson
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nFor over ten years\, Adventures by the Book has been offering our signature one-of-a-kind\, multi-sensorial events and travels with authors. An iPhone or iPad is required to chat live with the authors on the virtual stage; however\, event is accessible via live broadcast on all devices. Event access is provided via instructions emailed to you three days prior to the event. \n\n\nAbout the Author and Book\nWhitney Johnson is the CEO of human capital consultancy Disruption Advisors\, an Inc. 5000 2020 fastest-growing private company in America. One of the 50 leading business thinkers in the world (#14) as named by Thinkers50\, Whitney is an expert at smart growth leadership. \nWhitney is an innovation and disruption theorist and former award-winning Wall Street stock analyst. She is the author of the bestselling Build an A Team\, the critically-acclaimed Disrupt Yourself\, and is a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan Management Review. \nIn her new book\, Smart Growth\, growth is the goal. Helping people develop their potential—enabling them to articulate and become the self they want to be\, are capable of being\, and that best serves them and others in the short and long term—is what leaders strive toward. \nBut how do we grow? It turns out it happens in a predictable way\, which means we can understand where we are in our growth and chart a way forward. In this compact\, complete guide\, Whitney Johnson dives more deeply than ever into the S Curve of Learning so that you can envision how growth happens and direct yourself and others in your organization to create a culture that fosters it. \nThe growth and learning journey comes in three phases: the Launch Point\, the Sweet Spot\, and Mastery. Compelling examples of successful people will show you when and why growth is slow\, how to keep going\, what to do when growth and learning are almost too fast to keep up with\, and how to leap from one growth journey to another. As individuals grow\, so do organizations and societies. Growth is learning put into action—action that betters the world as we better ourselves and our small niches\, both personal and professional\, within it. Growth occurs when learning is internalized—when we try something new and invest the effort to move it from being something we do to something we are. \n\n\n\nAbout Fireside\nWe are thrilled to announce that Adventures by the Book has been invited to host a literary series on Fireside which will include book discussions\, author talks\, book clubs\, special presentations\, and much more. \nDuring the course of WWII\, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted a series of “fireside chats” on the radio\, as a way to regularly communicate self-assurance and calm during times of despair and uncertainty in our country. SUMMARY:Play Nice But Win: an ABTB Means Business Fireside Adventure featuring Michael Dell and Mark Cuban
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nYou may know MICHAEL DELL as the renowned innovator and technology leader who founded Dell Technologies\, but you may not know about the three battles waged to build his computer empire: one to launch it\, one to keep it\, and one to transform it. For the first time\, Michael reveals the highs and lows of the company’s evolution amidst a rapidly changing industry—and his own\, as he matured into the CEO it needed. \nIn his new book\, Play Nice But Win\, Michael recalls\, with humor and humility\, the mentors who showed him how to turn his passion into a business; the competitors who became friends\, foes\, or both; and the sharks that circled\, looking for weakness. What emerges is the long-term vision underpinning his success: that technology is ultimately about people and their potential. \nAnd who better to moderate our Play Nice But Win Adventure with Michael than renowned entrepreneur\, Fireside co-founder and Shark Tank TV star MARK CUBAN\, who also knows a thing or two about sharks and business. \nYour Adventure includes a hardcover copy of Play Nice But Win\, tax\, shipping within the U.S. and Canada\, a live Fireside discussion with Michael in conversation with Mark\, Q&A\, and the unique opportunity to converse live* on Fireside. \n*For admission to this event\, simply purchase a book below and we will send you a private VIP link to attend the virtual event. An iPhone or iPad is required to chat live with Michael and Mark on the virtual stage; however\, event is accessible via live broadcast on all devices. Event access is provided via instructions emailed to you a week prior to the event. All of Michael’s net proceeds from Play Nice But Win will go to the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation\, which is dedicated to transforming the lives of children living in urban poverty in the US\, India\, and South Africa. \n\nAbout the Author and Book\nMichael Dell is chairman and chief executive officer of Dell Technologies\, an innovator and technology leader providing the essential infrastructure for organizations to build their digital future\, transform IT and protect their most important information. He is the author of two books including the forthcoming book\, Play Nice But Win: A CEO’s Journey from Founder to Leader. \nMichael is an honorary member of the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum and is an executive committee member of the International Business Council. In 1999\, he and his wife\, Susan Dell\, established the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. \nIn his new book\, Michael Dell\, renowned founder and chief executive of one of America’s largest technology companies\, reveals the inside story of the battles that defined him as a leader. \nIn 1984\, soon-to-be college dropout Michael Dell hid signs of his fledgling PC business in the bathroom of his University of Texas dorm room. Almost 30 years later\, at the pinnacle of his success as founder and leader of Dell Technologies\, he found himself embroiled in a battle for his company’s survival. What he’d do next could ensure its legacy—or destroy it completely. \nMore than an honest portrait of a leader at a crossroads\, Play Nice But Win is a survival story proving that while anyone with technological insight and entrepreneurial zeal might build something great—it takes a leader to build something that lasts. \nAbout the Moderator\nMark Cuban is the co-founder of Fireside\, a “next-gen podcast platform” that facilitates live conversation\, as well as an American billionaire entrepreneur\, television personality\, and media proprietor. \nSince the age of twelve\, Mark has been a natural businessman. From selling garbage bags door to door\, Mark went on to create successful corporations\, such as MicroSolutions and Broadcast.com. In addition\, Mark is the best selling author of How to Win at the Sport of Business. \nHe is also the owner of the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team of the National Basketball Association (NBA)\, co-owner of 2929 Entertainment\, and chairman of AXS TV. He is also one of the main “shark” investors on the ABC reality television series Shark Tank. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Fireside\nWe are thrilled to announce that Adventures by the Book has been invited to host a literary series on Fireside which will include book discussions\, author talks\, book clubs\, special presentations\, and much more. \nDuring the course of WWII\, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted a series of “fireside chats” on the radio\, as a way to regularly communicate self-assurance and calm during times of despair and uncertainty in our country. With only $500 and five years of work experience\, she founded Horn Group\, a public relations firm that for a quarter century\, advised thousands of executives and their companies—from the hottest startups to the Fortune 500. She was one of few female CEOs in Silicon Valley in the early 1990s and has always aimed to exemplify authenticity and advise her clients on its merits. She’s written for publications including The Wall Street Journal\, Inc.\, Entrepreneur\, Forbes\, and CMO.com. \nSabrina founded Horn Group\, a public relations firm\, with $500 and five years’ job experience\, becoming one of few female CEOs in Silicon Valley in the early 1990s. Over a quarter century\, her firm advised thousands of executives and their companies—from the hottest startups to the Fortune 500—doing so with a special focus on authenticity. Horn Group was one of the most enduring\, iconic brands in the tech world\, with multiple offices in the US and global reach. \nIt received national acclaim as best US employer\, best US Tech agency\, and as a Top 10 US Independent Tech PR Firm\, among many other accolades for excellence in service and creativity. In 2015\, Horn oversaw her firm’s successful acquisition by Finn Partners\, a global marketing company. More recently\, she founded a new consulting practice\, HORN Strategy where she advises entrepreneurs as they navigate the early stages of their business \nIn her new book\, Make It\, Don’t Fake It\, Sabrina gives leaders the tools to resist “short hacks\,” and the courage to lead with authenticity and integrity. It’s not as simple as just being a good person or having morals. Driven to succeed\, entrepreneurs and executives-almost anyone moving up the corporate ladder-can be tempted to exaggerate or minimize the truth\, only to sabotage their own success and destroy their reputation. \nSo instead of digging yourself out of a hole with damage control\, why not steer clear of fakery by taking the path to real leadership\, an authentic foundation\, and enduring success? Sabrina shows us how by writing from two valuable vantage points: as a leader in public relations-a profession know for its spin-and as a CEO of her own national firm. She draws on 25 years of insights and stories to show how e can flip fakery into authenticity to reap greater rewards.\nauthenticity and integrity. SUMMARY:Smacked: An Adventure in Healing
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT*\nNOTE NEW VENUE: WOMEN’S MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA IN LIBERTY STATION\nJoin us for an Adventure in Healing with New York Times business journalist\, Eilene Zimmerman\, as she shares her brave and suspenseful\, and deeply personal\, family story. Illuminating urgent and troubling social issues of white collar drug addiction\, Eilene’s new book Smacked unveils her shocking discovery and her journey to find out how a man she knew for nearly 30 years became a drug addict. \nWhen this renowned journalist submitted her story for the first time to the New York Times in 2017\, she was concerned about the negative feedback she might receive from the business world. Instead\, her article became one of the most top-read stories the New York TImes has EVER published\, raising awareness and torching off a much-needed discussion about drug dependence today in a moneyed and upwardly mobile world. \nYour Adventure in Healing includes light refreshments\, author presentation\, book signing\, and the chance to meet the author and share her personal story. In addition\, you will have the opportunity to meet octogenarian Jeanne McAlister\, founder of McAlister Institute\, one of San Diego County’s largest alcohol and other drug treatment providers (see below for further information). \nIMPORTANT NOTE: Due to large response to this event\, the venue has been moved. Event will now be held at Women’s Museum of California\, 2730 Historic Decatur Road\, Suite 103\, San Diego\, CA 92106. \n*There are still spaces available to hear Eilene’s presentation at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law on February 12 at 6:00 pm\, or the San Diego County Bar Association on February 12 at noon.   \n\nAbout the Author and Book\n \nEilene Zimmerman has been a journalist for three decades\, covering business\, technology\, and social issues for a wide array of national magazines and newspapers. She was a columnist for The New York Times Sunday Business section for six years\, and since 2004\, has been a regular contributor to the newspaper. In 2017\, she also began her pursuit of a master’s degree in social work. \nHer new book\, Smacked\, is a brilliant and moving memoir of Eilene’s shocking discovery that sets her on a journey to find out how a man she knew for nearly 30 years became a drug addict\, hiding it so well that neither she nor anyone else in his life suspected what was happening. Peter was also addicted to work; the last call he ever made was to dial into a conference call. \nEilene is determined to learn all she can about Peter’s hidden life\, and also about the drug addiction among ambitious\, high-achieving professionals like him. Through extensive research and interviews\, she presents a picture of drug dependence today in that moneyed\, upwardly mobile world. She also embarks on a journey to recreate her life in the wake of loss\, both of the person – and the relationship – that profoundly defined the woman she had become. \nAbout McAlister Institute\nMcAlister Institute is one of San Diego County’s largest alcohol and other drug treatment providers. Founded by 87 year old Jeanne McAlister\, who is now 63 years sober\, Jeanne used her personal experience to build an agency that is founded upon empathy and hope and dedicated to serving those who suffer. She has constantly advocated for responsive and needed treatment services and developed programs which have adapted and grown to meet the needs of San Diegans. This remarkable octogenarian is still the first person in the office most mornings and always the last person to leave. She is actively working as the agency’s CEO. \nFounded in 1978\, McAlister Institute provides a comprehensive range of substance abuse treatment\, recovery\, and supportive services. Together\, McAlister Institute’s 24 programs represent a continuum of care that spans prevention and education\, outreach\, intervention\, outpatient treatment\, short-term and long-term residential care\, aftercare\, and sober living. Last year alone\, McAlister Institute provided substance use treatment services to more than 14\,600 individuals. \nIf you are moved by Eilene’s story and want to help those who are battling substance abuse and addiction\, we hope you will consider making a donation to McAlister Insitute. Donations will be accepted at the event by Jeanne McAlister\, or you can make your donation online.
