SUMMARY:Korean Dinner Adventure featuring acclaimed author A.H. Kim in conversation with SoCal author Kristin Rockaway
DESCRIPTION:About the In-Person Adventure\n“There are as many forms of love as there are moments in time.” — Jane Austen \nAnd let’s take a moment in time to meet acclaimed author A.H. Kim\, in conversation with SoCal author Kristin Rockaway\, in this Korean Dinner Adventure to celebrate Ann’s new book\, Relative Strangers\, a timely spin on Sense and Sensibility\, a twenty-first-century family drama featuring two half-Korean sisters\, their ex-hippie mother\, multiple messy love affairs and one explosive secret that could ruin everything. \nJoin us at Buga Korean BBQ for an authentic and delicious dinner and a lively book discussion! Experience the exquisite tastes of Korean cuisine and learn all about A.H’s witty and entertaining retelling and how it explores love\, loss\, grief\, and forgiveness through the perspectives of two sisters. \nYour Adventure includes dinner\, soft beverage\, tax\, gratuity\, and an opportunity to meet the authors up close and personal in an intimate setting! Pre-order your book below to be delivered to the event for signing. Copies will also be available at the event for purchase and signing. \n  \nAbout the Author and Book\n \nA.H. Kim (Ann) was born in Seoul\, South Korea and immigrated to the U.S. as a young child. Ann was educated at Harvard College and Berkeley Law School\, where she was an editor of the California Law Review. Ann practiced corporate law for many years and served as chief of staff to the CEO and as head of investor relations at a Fortune 200 company. \nAnn’s second novel\, Relative Strangers is a contemporary retelling of Sense and Sensibility and explores themes of love\, loss\, grief\, and forgiveness. \nAmelia Bae-Wood’s life is falling apart. Unemployed\, newly single and completely broke—for reasons she hasn’t told anyone yet—she finds herself hitchhiking across California to deal with the fallout of her mother’s eviction from the family estate. Amelia needs somewhere to live and time to figure out what to do with the rest of her life\, so moving with her mother and sister to Arcadia\, the cancer retreat center where her sister volunteers\, seems like as good an idea as any. \nAmelia’s sister\, Eleanor\, has too much on her plate\, including being caught up in a court battle with a man who claims to be their half brother from Seoul and their late father’s only son—a secret love child from his Korean youth—who’s fighting for a piece of everything that belongs to the Bae-Wood women. And when Amelia adds herself to Eleanor’s list of problems\, Eleanor must figure out what to hold on to—and when to let go—before things starts to unravel. \nA witty\, wry and enormously entertaining retelling\, the sisters’ journey of self-discovery as they reshape their lives gives this classic tale a modern\, feminist twist\, as it touches on themes of blended families\, race\, class and wealth. \n  \nAbout the Moderator\n \nKristin Rockaway is a native New Yorker living in Southern California. She’s the author of six novels\, including Smart Girl Summer\, Life\, Unscheduled\, and How to Hack a Heartbreak\, which has been optioned for television. In addition to writing\, she teaches Fiction with Gotham Writers Workshop and runs a boutique travel agency called Novel World Travel. When she’s not working\, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son and planning her next big vacation. \n  \nAbout Buga Korean BBQ\nBuga is a premium traditional Korean BBQ restaurant serving San Diego since 2001. They proudly present to you the highest quality and the authentic experience with their friendly service. \n \n\nSave

Pre-order your book below to be delivered to the event for signing. Copies will also be available at the event for purchase and signing.  We hope to see you there! \nAbout the Author and Book\n \n\nBeth Ann Mathews is a marine biologist and a mother of one son. She grew up in a large family in the Midwest and earned a degree in Animal Science at Purdue University. As a professor at the University of Alaska Southeast\, Beth taught courses in biology\, behavioral ecology\, and marine mammalogy and led research on harbor seals\, Steller sea lions\, and harbor porpoises with her students\, mainly in Glacier Bay National Park. After twenty years in Alaska\, Beth and her husband sold their home to begin an expedition with their young son on the family’s 42-foot sailboat from Alaska to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. \nFeedback from her blog during the three-year journey inspired her to write stories about their sailing adventures as well as Deep Waters\, a memoir about her family’s struggle to survive\, and move beyond\, her husband’s unusual stroke in 2008. This memoir won the Memoirs (personal struggle/health issues) category of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards\, and a bronze award in the Independent Publishers Book Awards\, for Best Regional Non-Fiction\, West-Pacific region. \nDeep Waters is a gripping\, intimate story of relationship resilience set against the backdrop of Alaska’s dramatic marine wilderness. A marine biologist’s adventurous life as a professor\, wife\, and mother in Alaska is upended when her healthy husband is slammed by a rare type of stroke. His radical approach to recovery clashes with her instinct to keep him safe at home and sets them on a collision course as he insists on ambitious sailing expeditions with Beth and their young son in Alaska’s magnificent yet unforgiving waters. \n\nTo schedule a book club visit with Beth Ann or any of our authors on NovelNetwork: \n\n\nConnect with this Author on NovelNetwork®\n\n\n\nRegistration\nTo register for this event\, select the Dinner Event option below. Her work has been published in twenty countries and taught in universities\, colleges and high schools across the world. \nJean immigrated from Hong Kong to Brooklyn when she was five and worked in a Chinatown clothing factory for much of her childhood while living in an unheated\, roach-infested apartment. In between her undergraduate degree at Harvard and MFA in fiction at Columbia\, she worked for three years as a professional ballroom dancer. Jean is trilingual\, fluent in Dutch\, Chinese and English\, and studied Latin for seven years. She divides her time between the Netherlands and New York City. \nThe Leftover Woman is an evocative family drama and a riveting mystery about the ferocious pull of motherhood for two very different women. Jasmine Yang arrives in New York City from her rural Chinese village without money or family support\, fleeing a controlling husband\, on a desperate search for the daughter who was taken from her at birth. But with her husband on her trail\, the clock is ticking\, and she’s forced to make increasingly desperate decisions if she ever hopes to be reunited with her daughter. \nMeanwhile\, publishing executive Rebecca Whitney seems to have it all: a prestigious family name and the wealth that comes with it\, a high-powered career\, a beautiful home\, a handsome husband\, and an adopted Chinese daughter she adores. But when an industry scandal threatens to jeopardize not only Rebecca’s job but her marriage\, this perfect world begins to crumble and her role in her own family is called into question. \n  \nAbout Mandarin House\nThe Mandarin House is ultimately the result of an improbable meeting of two young friends randomly meeting again after 5 years at an airport on the way to America. John – Tat – Law and Bill – Wai Choi – Man were young teenagers growing up working and cooking in the restaurants of Hong Kong in the 1960’s. A chance meeting brought them back together and sent the pair on a journey from the East coast of America to beautiful San Diego over a span of multiple years and working and cooking in multiple restaurants along the way. \nBut with a chance to finally do something of their own\, the young chefs found an opportunity to transform an old diner into their dream and\, in 1977\, The Mandarin House of La Jolla was born. They serve all the best versions of all the classic Chinese dishes that you know and love in a fun\, retro yet modern environment. Their classically trained chefs are still using traditional techniques coupled with their original recipes to bring you a dining experience unlike anywhere else in the world.

New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Brown dares to answer just that with her striking and intimate new novel\, Any Other Family.  And what better way to discuss a family-themed book than with a family-style dinner with the author\, in the fun and eclectic Buca di Beppo restaurant. \nYour Adventure includes an authentic Italian dinner at the Carlsbad Buca di Beppo Restaurant that includes salad\, entrée\, bread\, dessert\, soft beverage\, tax\, gratuity\, author presentation\, book signing\, and the opportunity to engage in meaningful and intimate conversation with Eleanor. Pre-order your hardcover copy of Any Other Family along with your dinner registration and receive at a special discount. \n*Special dietary requests are available upon request with seven days’ notice. \n  \nAbout the Author and Book\n \nEleanor Brown is the New York Times and #1 international bestselling author of The Weird Sisters and The Light of Paris. Her writing has been hailed by People magazine as “delightful” and “creative and original” by Library Journal. \nIn addition to her fiction writing\, Eleanor edited the anthology A Paris All Your Own. Her book reviews\, interviews\, and essays have been featured in publications including The Washington Post\, The Guardian\, and Publishers Weekly. Born and raised in the Washington\, D.C. area\, Eleanor lives with her family in Colorado. \nHer new novel\, Any Other Family\, is about about three very different women facing an impossible question: What makes a family? \nThough they look like any other family\, they aren’t one—not quite. They are three sets of parents who find themselves intertwined after adopting four biological siblings\, having committed to keeping the children as connected as possible. \nAt the heart of the family\, the adoptive mothers grapple to define themselves and their new roles. Tabitha\, who adopted the twins\, crowns herself planner of the group\, responsible for coordinating playdates and holidays\, determined to create a perfect happy family. Quiet and steady Ginger\, single mother to the eldest daughter\, is wary of the way these complicated not-quite-family relationships test her boundaries. And Elizabeth is terrified that her unhappiness after adopting a newborn means she was not meant to be a mother at all. \nPushed into uncomfortably close quarters on their first family vacation\, when they receive a call from their children’s birth mother announcing she is pregnant again\, the delicate bonds the women are struggling to form threaten to collapse. \nDeeply empathetic and shrewdly observed\, Any Other Family opens a conversation about modern adoption\, the rules of family\, and what it means to be a good parent. \n  \nAbout Buca di Beppo Restaurant\n\n\nThe first Buca di Beppo opened its doors in 1993 in the basement of a Minneapolis apartment building. Since then\, they’ve grown to over 100 locations worldwide. Their mission is to capture the fun and enthusiasm of an authentic Italian gathering along with delectable food. Every Buca di Beppo restaurant offers an eclectic setting designed to make every occasion a party! Their dishes are inspired by the cuisine enjoyed for generations in villages throughout Italy. Their dishes are served family-style\, meant to be shared by the entire table. Nothing brings a group closer together than trying a bit of this and a taste of that.

SUMMARY:Inside the Author's Studio: A Laugh Out Loud Adventure featuring Actress and NYT Bestselling Author Annabelle Gurwitch (Live and In Person)
DESCRIPTION:About the Live\, In Person\, Event\n\nHave you ever wanted to go behind the scenes with an author to get a glimpse of where they live and work\, to learn more about the writer behind the book? Well\, our curiosity got the best of us too\, which inspired the launch of our new series\, Inside the Author’s Studio\, dedicated to exclusive and intimate private home Adventures with some of your favorite authors. \nWe are thrilled to announce the second of our Inside the Author’s Studio Adventures featuring activist\, actress and New York Times bestselling author Annabelle Gurwitch! Please join us for a Laugh Out Loud Adventure at a private residence (not the author’s home)\, where Annabelle will be discussing her latest novel\, You’re Leaving When?: Adventures in Downward Mobility. And since this event falls during Hanukkah\, Annabelle will be sharing her own Jewish family stories while we all enjoy a tasting of traditional Hanukkah foods. \nAnd since part of any writer’s journey is ensuring that everyone has access to literacy and reading materials\, we want to dedicate a portion of all book sales from the event to Traveling Stories\, whose mission it is to eradicate illiteracy\, one book at a time. \nYour Adventure includes an exclusive invite into a private residence\, a tasting of Jewish-themed foods\, a hardcover copy of You’re Leaving When?: Adventures in Downward Mobility to be signed at the event\, tax\, gratuity\, book discussion\, Q&A\, donation to Traveling Stories\, and an opportunity to meet the author up close and personal in the private residence. Due to the private and intimate nature of this event\, tickets are limited and will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis\, so make sure to register soon to guarantee admission. \nOnly books purchased below or at the event are eligible for signing. The event address will be emailed to Adventurers 3 days prior to the event. \n*PLEASE NOTE: COVID-19 vaccination is required for attendees. She’s written for The New Yorker\, New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, Wall Street Journal\, LA Magazine and Hadassah amongst other publications. \nYou may recognize Annabelle as the longtime cohost of Dinner & a Movie on TBS and a regular commentator on NPR. She’s performed on the Moth Mainstage\, at Carolines on Broadway\, and at arts centers around the country. Her acting credits include: Seinfeld\, Murphy Brown\, Boston Legal and Dexter and once in while she returns to acting playing a rabbi on Better Things on FX or a therapist for an FBI agent in Michael Bay’s upcoming Ambulance. \nIn her newest book\, You’re Leaving When?: Adventures in Downward Mobility\, Annabelle gives irreverent and empathetic voice to a generation hurtling into their next chapter with no safety net and proves that our no-frills new normal doesn’t mean a deficit of humor. \nIn these essays\, Gurwitch embraces homesharing\, welcoming a housing-insecure young couple and a bunny rabbit into her home. The mother of a college student in recovery who sheds the gender binary\, she relearns to parent\, one pronoun at a time. She wades into the dating pool in a Miss Havisham-inspired line of lingerie and flunks the magic of tidying up. You’re Leaving When? is for anybody who thought they had a semblance of security but wound up with a fragile economy and a blankie. Gurwitch offers stories of resilience\, adaptability\, low-rent redemption\, and the kindness of strangers. Even in a muted Zoom. \n  \nAbout Traveling Stories\n\n\nTraveling Stories is a nonprofit organization based in San Diego\, California that has been providing low-income children access to quality literacy support since 2010. Their mission is to empower children to achieve their dreams. DESCRIPTION:About the Live\, In Person\, Event\n\nIt’s that time of year again – time to turn your clocks back one hour and gain an extra hour of sleep in anticipation of cooler weather\, perfect for curling up with a good book. And what better way to fall back in time\, to the mid-1860’s and late-1960’s\, than by diving into not one\, not two\, but three fascinating works of historical fiction. \nPlease join us as we welcome NYT bestselling authors Kristin Harmel\, Alka Joshi\, and Martha Hall Kelly at our fun Fall Back In Time Dinner Adventure at Café Coyote\, as the authors discuss their respective books\, The Forest of Vanishing Stars (an evocative coming-of-age World War II story based partially on incredible true accounts of survival)\, The Secret Keeper of Jaipur\, (henna artist Lakshmi arranges for her protégé to intern at the Jaipur Palace)\, and Sunflower Sisters (the story of a Union nurse during the Civil War whose calling leads her to cross paths with a young enslaved girl). \nYour Adventure includes a signature Cafe Coyote Mexican dinner\, chips and salsa\, a soft beverage\, tax\, gratuity\, author presentation\, book signing\, and the opportunity to engage in meaningful and intimate conversation with all three authors. VIP reception begins at 3:00 pm. Only books purchased below or at the event will be eligible for signing. \n  \nAbout the Authors and Books\nKristin Harmel is the New York Times bestselling\, USA Today bestselling\, and #1 international bestselling author of The Book of Lost Names\, The Winemaker’s Wife\, and a dozen other novels that have been translated into twenty-nine languages and are sold all over the world. \nA former reporter for PEOPLE magazine\, Kristin has been writing professionally since the age of 16\, when she began her career as a sportswriter\, covering Major League Baseball and NHL hockey for a local magazine in Tampa Bay\, Florida in the late 1990s. After stints covering health and lifestyle for American Baby\, Men’s Health\, and Woman’s Day\, she became a reporter for PEOPLE magazine while still in college and spent more than a decade working for the publication\, covering everything from the Super Bowl to high-profile murders to celebrity interviews. Her favorite stories at PEOPLE\, however\, were the “Heroes Among Us” features—tales of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. \nHer new historical novel\, The Forest of Vanishing Stars\, based partially on incredible true stories of survival against staggering odds\, is an evocative coming-of-age World War II story about a young woman who uses her knowledge of the wilderness to help Jewish refugees escape the Nazis—until a secret from her past threatens everything. \n  \nBorn in Jodhpur\, Rajasthan\, India\, Alka Joshi has lived in the U.S. since the age of nine. She has a BA from Stanford University and an MFA from California College of the Arts. She ran her own advertising and PR agency for 30 years. The Henna Artist was her first novel. Currently\, she is working on the third book of the trilogy and a screen adaption of The Henna Artist. \nFor decades\, she wrote advertising commercials and marketing copy. It was her husband who urged her to try fiction. He encouraged her to take evening workshops\, which she really enjoyed. When she enrolled in the MFA program in Creative Writing at the age of 51\, her instructors were so generous with their praise that she began to feel like a semi-serious writer. It wasn’t until her literary agent notified her that MIRA Books\, a division of Harper Collins\, had sent a really good contract that she realized she’d become an author! \nIn Alka’s intriguing new novel\, The Secret Keeper of Jaipur\, henna artist Lakshmi arranges for her protégé\, Malik\, to intern at the Jaipur Palace in this tale rich in character\, atmosphere\, and lavish storytelling. While this is a stand alone novel\, The Secret Keeper of Jaipur picks up where international bestselling novel The Henna Artist\, a Reese Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick\, leaves off. \n  \nMartha Hall Kelly is the New York Times bestselling author of the 1.5-million-copy bestselling novel Lilac Girls and Lost Roses. A native New Englander\, Martha enjoys spending her days filling legal pads with stories and reading World War II books. \nInspired by true accounts\, Martha’s new work of historical fiction\, Sunflower Sisters\, provides a vivid\, detailed look at the Civil War experience\, from the barbaric and inhumane plantations\, to a war-torn New York City\, to the horrors of the battlefield. It’s a sweeping story of women caught in a country on the brink of collapse\, in a society grappling with nationalism and unthinkable racial cruelty\, a story still so relevant today. \nLilac Girls introduced readers to Caroline Ferriday\, an American philanthropist who helped young girls released from Ravensbruck concentration camp. Now\, in Sunflower Sisters\, Kelly tells the story of her ancestor Georgeanna Woolsey\, a Union nurse who joins the war effort during the Civil War\, and how her calling leads her to cross paths with Jemma\, a young enslaved girl who is sold off and conscripted into the army\, and Anne-May Wilson\, a southern plantation mistress whose husband enlists. \n\nAbout Café Coyote\n\n\nFor over 30 years Café Coyote has remained one of San Diego’s Landmark Restaurants located in the Heart of Old Town San Diego’s Historic Walking District. A friendly staff\, loyal patrons\, delicious Mexican Food\, and a Festive Atmosphere have contributed to Café Coyote’s being Voted Best Mexican Restaurant 18 Years In A Row! \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Summer by the Sea Dinner Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Photos from this Event\nVisit our Facebook for more photos from this event \n \nAbout the Event\nIt’s summertime\, so what better way to spend your evening than by discovering a fresh new voice in fiction at our Summer by the Sea Dinner Adventure\, featuring debut novelist Nicola Harrison\, in conversation with New York Times bestselling and beloved San Diego author Michelle Gable. \nDon’t miss this delightful Adventure at King’s Fish House\, where Nicola and Michelle will discuss Montauk\, Nicola’s captivating debut novel that brings to life the glamour and romance of a summer by the sea about a woman torn between the life she chose and the life she desires. \nYour Adventure includes a pre-fixe dinner\, soft drink\, tax\, gratuity\, author presentation\, book signing\, and the opportunity to enjoy conversation with Nicola and Michelle and other reading enthusiasts in an intimate setting. \n\nAbout the Author\nOriginally from Hampshire\, England\, Nicola Harrison moved to California when she was 14. She studied Literature at UCLA and received an MFA in creative writing at Stony Brook University. She is a member of The Writers Room and has short stories published in The Southhampton Review and Glimmer Train as well as articles in Los Angeles Magazine and Orange Coast Magazine. \nShe was the fashion and style staff writer for Forbes and had a weekly column at Lucky Magazine. Nicola is also the founder of a personal styling business\, Harrison Style. She has spent many summers in Montauk and currently lives in Greenwich Village\, Manhattan.  Montauk is her first novel. \nAbout the Book: Montauk\, Long Island\, 1938. For three months\, this humble fishing village will serve as the playground for New York City’s wealthy elite. Beatrice Bordeaux was looking forward to a summer of reigniting the passion between her and her husband\, Harry. Instead\, tasked with furthering his investment interest in Montauk as a resort destination\, she learns she’ll be spending twelve weeks sequestered with the high society wives at The Montauk Manor—a two-hundred room seaside hotel—while Harry pursues other interests in the city. \nCollege educated\, but raised a modest country girl in Pennsylvania\, Bea has never felt fully comfortable among these privileged women\, whose days are devoted not to their children but to leisure activities and charities that seemingly benefit no one but themselves. She longs to be a mother herself\, as well as a loving wife\, but after five years of marriage she remains childless while Harry is increasingly remote and distracted. Despite lavish parties at the Manor and the Yacht Club\, Bea is lost and lonely and befriends the manor’s laundress whose work ethic and family life stir memories of who she once was. \nAs she drifts further from the society women and their preoccupations and closer toward Montauk’s natural beauty and community spirit\, Bea finds herself drawn to a man nothing like her husband –stoic\, plain spoken and enigmatic. Inspiring a strength and courage she had almost forgotten\, his presence forces her to face a haunting tragedy of her past and question her future. \nDesperate to embrace moments of happiness\, no matter how fleeting\, she soon discovers that such moments may be all she has\, when fates conspire to tear her world apart…  \nAbout Michelle Gable\nMichelle Gable is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of A Paris Apartment\, I’ll See You in Paris\, The Book of Summer\, and most recently\, The Summer I Met Jack. \nMichelle grew up in sunny San Diego and began writing in fourth grade after her parents gave her a book called Someday You’ll Write. She later attended The College of William & Mary and majored in accounting\, and pursued work in finance and investment banking before turning her skills to writing. \nFrom age 10 and ever since\, she wrote. Nearly every day. she wrote at five o’clock in the morning\, or eleven o’clock at night\, or while her children assembled their own school lunches. I’ll See You in Paris was written almost entirely by hand\, sitting behind softball dugouts or in the car while her daughters warmed up pitching and catching. \n“That\, my friends\, is my #1 tip for becoming a published author. You write. No matter what.” \n

SUMMARY:House of Broken Angels Dinner Adventure

In Urrea’s signature exceptional storytelling and what NPR calls “brilliant…exceptional…hums with joy\,” The House of Broken Angels is the story of the De La Cruz family\, who come together across borders at the behest of patriarch Miguel Angel de La Cruz\, who wishes to gather his progeny for a final birthday fiesta. \nYour Adventure includes chips and salsa\, a delicious Mexican dinner\, soft beverage\, dessert\, tax\, gratuity\, author presentation\, Q&A\, book signing\, and the chance to meet the author up-close and personal in an authentic and intimate setting. \n*Due to the exciting news that Luis has just been announced as a finalist for this year’s National Book Critics Circle Awards\, which are being held on our original event date of March 14\, 2019\, we have moved our event date until March 24\, 2019\, which means we can celebrate with him at our event!) \n**Or better yet\, why not join our fiesta a bit early with a special 45 minute “Angel” reception prior to dinner\, which not only includes the dinner Adventure\, but offers you the unique opportunity to spend 45 minutes extra with the author while enjoying a house cocktail and a copy of The House of Broken Angels\, which Luis will exclusively sign for you at the reception. \n\nAbout the Author and Book\n \nHailed by NPR as a “literary badass” and a “master storyteller with a rock and roll heart\,” Luis Alberto Urrea is a prolific and acclaimed writer who uses his dual-culture life experiences to explore greater themes of love\, loss and triumph. \nA 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist for nonfiction and member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame\, Urrea is the critically acclaimed and bestselling author of 17 books\, winning numerous awards for his poetry\, fiction\, and essays. Born in Tijuana to a Mexican father and American mother\, Urrea is most recognized as a border writer\, though he says\, “I am more interested in bridges\, not borders.” \nUrrea attended the University of California at San Diego\, earning an undergraduate degree in writing and did his graduate studies at the University of Colorado-Boulder. \nAfter serving as a relief worker in Tijuana and a film extra and columnist-editor-cartoonist for several publications\, Urrea moved to Boston where he taught expository writing and fiction workshops at Harvard. He also taught at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Urrea currently lives with his family in Naperville\, IL\, where he is a distinguished professor of creative writing at the University of Illinois-Chicago. \nThe House of Broken Angels is\, as Urrea describes it\, “the story of an American family—one that happens to speak Spanish and admire the Virgin of Guadalupe. Imperfect and glorious\, messy and hilarious\, sometimes heroic.” Inspired by the death of his brother\, Urrea’s novel mines his own family history to tell a once-in-a-lifetime tale\, simultaneously intimate in its detail and grand in its scope. Miguel Angel De La Cruz\, aka “Big Angel\,” is dying. The beloved and rapidly declining patriarch of the De La Cruz clan\, he assembles his relatives for a final\, epic birthday bash. Days before the party\, however\, his mother\, nearly a hundred herself\, passes away\, resulting in a hefty farewell fete. Over the course of one weekend\, the family members reminisce under the San Diego sun and stars\, sharing stories about growing up in Mexico\, leaving Mexico\, and making a home in the U.S. \nNo matter where you live\, whether you were born in the U.S. or grew up elsewhere\, this affectionate\, passionate\, flawed family will likely remind you in some way of your own. And novels like The House of Broken Angels—offering clarifying insight into the daily lives\, the trials and triumphs\, of Mexican-Americans—are especially needed today. We believe it’s a beautiful masterwork worthy of your close attention. \nAbout Cafe Coyote\n\nFor over 25 years\, Cafe Coyote has remained one of San Diego’s landmark restaurants. Their friendly staff\, loyal patrons\, delicious food\, and festive atmosphere have contributed to Cafe Coyote’s being voted Best Mexican Restaurant in 2005\, 2006\, 2008\, 2009\, 2010\, 2011\, 2012\, 2013\, 2014\, 2015\, 2016\, and 2017!

Many customers sit at the bar and enjoy the traditional hot tea and other drinks while socializing. During this difficult journey and with so few resources at her disposal\, Reyna found refuge in words\, and it was her love of reading and writing that propelled her to rise above until she achieved the impossible and was accepted to the University of California\, Santa Cruz. Although her acceptance was a triumph\, the actual experience of American college life was intimidating and unfamiliar for someone like Reyna\, who was then once again estranged from her family and support system. Once again\, she found solace in words\, holding fast to her vision of becoming a writer\, only to discover she knew nothing about what it takes to make a career out of a dream. \nSave

If you love mystery books and beer (and really\, who doesn’t?)\, then make sure to join us at Pure Project Brewery in Bankers Hill\, San Diego. \nAs you enjoy a casual dinner\, and beer (of course!)\, Deanna\, Paddy\, and Matthew will discuss their exciting new books\, A Murderous Relation\, Hudson’s Kill\, and The Night Agent. \nYour Adventure includes dinner\, your choice of not just one\, but two beers (or substitute for kombucha or sparkling flavored waters) from event menu\, tax\, gratuity\, author talk\, book signing\, and the chance to meet the authors up-close and personal in a fun and intimate setting. Special discount is available when purchasing a three-pack of all authors’ books! \n\nAbout the Authors and Books\nDeanna Raybourn is the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award nominated author whose novels have been nominated for numerous awards including 5 RITAs\, 2 RT Reviewers’ Choice awards\, the Agatha\, 2 Dilys Winns\, a Last Laugh\, and 3 du Mauriers. \nIn her new book\, A Murderous Relation\, a Veronica Speedwell Mystery #5\, Veronica navigates a dark world of scandal and murder when she and her natural historian colleague Stoker are asked by Lady Wellingtonia Beauclerk to help with a potential scandal so explosive it threatens to rock the monarchy. \nWorse yet\, London is gripped by hysteria in the autumn of 1888\, terrorized by what would become the most notorious and elusive serial killer in history\, Jack the Ripper–and Lady Wellie suspects the prince may be responsible. \n  \n\nPaddy Hirsch is “a writer\, a journalist\, and an explainer\,” who has worked in news for nearly 20 years. His first novel\, The Devil’s Half Mile\, is a historical thriller\, set in New York in 1799. The Devil’s Half Mile is a nickname for Wall Street\, and has themes of high finance\, corruption and criminality. \nThe sequel\, Hudson’s Kill\, is set in 1803 New York. Rife with tension as the city expands\, violence builds as a mysterious provocateur pits the city’s black and Irish gangs against each other. \nWhen a young black girl is found stabbed to death\, both Justy Flanagan\, now a City Marshal\, and Kerry O’Toole\, now a school teacher\, decide separately to go after the killer. They each find their way to a shadowy community on the fringes of the growing city\, where they uncover a craven political conspiracy bound up with a criminal enterprise that is stunning in its depravity. \n  \nMatthew Quirk is a New York Times bestselling author who has studied history and literature at Harvard College. After graduation\, he spent five years at The Atlantic reporting on crime\, private military contractors\, terrorism prosecutions\, and international gangs. \nIn his latest book\, an exhilarating political thriller\, an idealistic young FBI agent must question everything and trust no one to stop a Russian mole in the White House to save America from a catastrophic betrayal. \nNo one was more surprised than FBI Agent Peter Sutherland when he’s tapped to work in the White House Situation Room. From his earliest days as a surveillance specialist\, Peter has scrupulously done everything by the book\, hoping his record will help him escape the taint of his past. When Peter was a boy\, his father\, a section chief in FBI counterintelligence\, was suspected of selling secrets to the Russians—a catastrophic breach that had cost him his career\, his reputation\, and eventually his life. \nAbout Pure Project\n \nPure Project started back in 2013 when friends from San Diego\, Jesse Pine and Mat Robar were on a backpacking trip with friends in the Rocky Mountains.  Now if you have ever been backpacking\, there is not a whole lot distracting you out there\, so you tend to talk a lot on the trail and that is where it started\, on the slow climb to the top of a 12\,253 ft mountain in Colorado… \nJesse had recently moved to Costa Rica and was starting to become acquainted with the country.  The conversation flowed from the scenic vistas he had seen to hidden beaches\, exotic local fruits and eventually settled on beer oddly enough.  You see at that time in Costa Rica\, there weren’t many options for beer other than mass produced local lagers.  That being said\, Jesse had attended the country’s 2nd annual craft beer festival and saw that it was starting to gain some traction\, not just with American expats looking for a taste of home\, but also with the local population. \n. \n  \n  \nSave
