SUMMARY:Double Trouble: a BFF Happy Hour Adventure featuring fan-favorites Alli Frank & Asha Youmans and Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke
DESCRIPTION:About the In-Person Adventure\n\nHere comes trouble… and make it double! \nDouble trouble in this case is a good thing\, because it is an opportunity for you to meet not one\, but two\, fan-favorite author duos: Alli Frank & Asha Youmans and Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke. Come enjoy a delicious glass of wine\, along with some scrumptious bite-sized snacks as we celebrate the newest book releases of these two sets of author best friends! \nYour Adventure includes a happy hour experience\, a glass of wine paired with some delicious snacks\, tax\, gratuity\, and an opportunity to meet both sets of authors up close and personal in an intimate setting. Better yet\, double your fun with our VIP ticket which includes discounted event plus copies of bothThe Better Half and Forever Hold Your Peace to be delivered to the event for signing. \n  \nAbout the Authors and Books\n \nAlli Frank and Asha Youmans found literary soulmates in each other after working together as teacher and school administrator in Seattle\, WA. They discovered a shared mission as educators and as authors— to use humor\, joy and compassion to write stories that encourage candid conversations about issues such as race\, religion\, culture\, class\, privilege\, parenting and education. Their debut\, Tiny Imperfections\, tackled desperate parents and their ill-fated misbehaviors with razor-sharp wit\, followed by Never Meant to Meet You\, which deftly mined the often comedic and underexplored common ground between Black and Jewish experiences in America. \nTheir newest collaboration\, The Better Half\, captivated Mindy Kaling\, and Mindy’s Book Studio\, to publish the book in collaboration with Amazon Publishing. It is a sidesplitting spin on reaching the pinnacle of life\, only to stare down a slippery slope on the other side. \nAfter a difficult five years\, at age forty-three\, Nina Morgan Clarke’s time has finally arrived. With an ex-husband relocated across the country\, her father bouncing back after the loss of his beloved wife\, and her daughter\, Xandra\, thriving at boarding school\, Nina is stepping into her dream job as a trifecta: a first-generation\, Black female head of the storied Royal-Hawkins School. To mark the moment\, Nina and her best friend\, Marisol\, take a long-overdue girls’ trip to celebrate the second half of Nina’s life―which is shaping up to be the best part of her life. \nAs Nina’s school year gets underway\, all seems to be progressing as planned. Before long\, wunder-hire Jared Jones\, two hundred pounds of Harvard-educated ego\, relentlessly pushes Nina to her ethical limits. Soon after\, dutiful Xandra accuses one of her teachers of misconduct. And most alarming\, the repercussions of her trip with Marisol force Nina into a life-altering choice. Time is of the essence\, and Nina must decide if she will embrace a future she never could have predicted.. \nAlli Frank and Asha Youmans bring their very different cultural backgrounds and perspectives together to write in one seamless\, cohesive voice\, united in their belief that humor and fiction can inspire empathy and learning\, and that exposure to diverse experiences can only enrich one’s life. \n  \n \nLiz Fenton and Lisa Steinke have been best friends for over thirty years and survived high school and college together. They’ve co-authored seven novels\, including the Amazon Charts bestseller\, The Good Widow. In addition to writing books\, they created a podcast\, We Fight So You Don’t Have to: Lessons from a thirty-year friendship. They also appear monthly on a San Diego news station to share their favorite book club picks. \nTheir forthcoming book\, Forever Hold Your Peace\, is like Father of the Bride meets Bride Wars\, and features two ex-best friends find themselves shockingly entangled after more than two decades apart. \nWhen their newly engaged kids ask all four divorced parents to meet each other over brunch\, everyone RSVPs yes–secretly hoping someone at the table will get to the bottom of the bottomless mimosas fast enough to say what they’re all thinking: that this engagement\, coming after a whirlwind romance between two people barely out of college\, is too much too soon. \nBut at that brunch it’s not the impulsive couple’s decisions that end up under the microscope\, as it turns out June\, mother of the bride\, and Amy\, mother of the groom\, certainly do know each other–they’re ex-best-friends who haven’t spoken since their explosive falling out more than twenty-five years ago. Reeling from their unwanted reunion and eager to shift the spotlight off their past as decades-old secrets and rivalries come to light\, the two moms battle it out for the prize of Most Enthusiastic About This Wedding. \nBut when their history—and their present-day shenanigans—threaten to crack the foundations of the happy couple’s future\, June and Amy find themselves becoming unexpected allies in an all-hands-on-deck effort to get their kids (and themselves) a happily-ever-after two generations in the making. \n  \nAbout Napatini Bistro and Wine Bar\nLynn and Gary McLean are the owner-operators of Carlsbad’s Napatini Bistro & Wine Bar. Runyan writes to celebrate history’s unsung heroines. She has written five historical novels\, including the internationally bestselling Daughters of the Night Sky. Her most recent novel\, Girls on the Line is a Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choice for February 2019. She was a finalist for the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer of the Year award and Colorado Book Award in 2019 and is a finalist for the Colorado Book Award again in 2020. \nIn her upcoming intriguing historical novel\, The School for German Brides\, a young woman who is sent to a horrific “bride school” to be molded into the perfect Nazi wife finds her life forever intertwined with a young Jewish woman about to give birth. \nGermany\, 1939. As the war begins\, Hanna Rombauer\, a young German woman\, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected\, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer. The independence that her mother lovingly fostered in her is considered highly inappropriate as the future wife of an up-and-coming officer and she is sent to a “bride school.” There\, in a posh villa on the outskirts of town\, Hanna is taught how to be a “proper” German wife. The lessons of hatred\, prejudice\, and misogyny disturb her and she finds herself desperate to escape. \nFor Mathilde Altman\, a German Jewish woman\, the war has brought more devastation than she ever thought possible. Torn from her work\, her family\, and her new husband\, she fights to keep her unborn baby safe. But when the unthinkable happens\, Tilde realizes she must hide. The risk of discovery grows greater with each passing day\, but she has no other options. \nWhen Hanna discovers that Tilde is hiding near the school\, she knows she must help her however she can. For Tilde\, fear wars with desperation. The women must take extraordinary risks to save the lives of mother and baby. Will they both be able to escape with their lives and if they do\, what kind of future can they possibly hope for? \n  \n\n \n\nJennifer Coburn is the author of the highly-anticipated historical novel\, Cradles of the Reich\, about three very different women living at a Nazi Lebensborn breeding home at the start of World War ll. \nJennifer has also published a mother-daughter travel memoir\, We’ll Always Have Paris\, as well as six contemporary women’s novels. Additionally\, Jennifer has contributed to five literary anthologies\, including A Paris All Your Own. \nWhen Jennifer is not going down historical research rabbit holes\, she volunteers with So Say We All\, a live storytelling organization\, where she is a performer\, producer\, and performance coach. She is also an active volunteer with Reality Changers\, a nonprofit that supports low-income high school students in becoming the first in their families to attend college. She specializes in college essay development\, interview prep\, and all-around tiger mothering. \nGermany 1939. The nation is on the brink of war and Hitler’s plan to create a “master race” of pure-blooded Aryan babies has been launched. The top-secret Lebensborn Nazi breeding program is brought to life in Cradles of the Reich\, the story of three German women who change the course of one another’s lives. \nAt Heim Hochland\, a Nazi breeding home in Bavaria\, three women’s fates are irrevocably intertwined. Gundi is a pregnant university student from Berlin. An Aryan beauty\, she’s secretly a member of a resistance group. Hilde\, only eighteen\, is a true believer in the cause and is thrilled to carry a Nazi official’s child. And Irma\, a 44-year-old nurse\, is desperate to build a new life for herself after personal devastation. All three have everything to lose. \nTo schedule a book club visit with Jennifer or any of our authors on NovelNetwork: \n Connect with this Author on NovelNetwork®\n \nSave

It follows Honey Lovett\, the daughter of the beloved Troublesome book woman\, who must fight for her own independence with the help of the women who guide her and the books that set her free. \nIn the ruggedness of the beautiful Kentucky mountains\, Honey Lovett has always known that the old ways can make a hard life harder. As the daughter of the famed blue-skinned\, Troublesome Creek packhorse librarian\, Honey and her family have been hiding from the law all her life. But when her mother and father are imprisoned\, Honey realizes she must fight to stay free\, or risk being sent away for good. Picking up her mother’s old packhorse library route\, Honey begins to deliver books to the remote hollers of Appalachia. But the route can be treacherous\, and some folks aren’t as keen to let a woman pave her own way. \nIf Honey wants to bring the freedom books provide to the families who need it most\, she’s going to have to fight for her place\, and along the way\, learn that the extraordinary women who run the hills and hollers can make all the difference in the world. \n  \n\n \n\nAshley Blooms is the author of Every Bone a Prayer\, which was long-listed for the Crook’s Corner Book Prize and which NPR said “bears within its pages striking beauty and strangeness in equal measure.” Her second novel\, Where I Can’t Follow\, will be published by Sourcebooks in February 2022. \nBorn and raised in Cutshin\, Kentucky\, Blooms received her MFA as a John and Renee Grisham Fellow at the University of Mississippi. But that end seems to be stretching as far away as the other side of Blackdamp County\, Kentucky. There’s always another bill for Granny’s doctor\, another problem with the car\, another reason she’s getting nowhere. \nShe dreams of walking through her little door to leave it all behind. The doors have appeared to the people in her mountain town for as long as anyone can remember\, though no one knows where they lead. All anyone knows is that if you go\, you’ll never come back. Maren’s mother left through her door when Maren was nine\, and her shadow has followed Maren ever since. When she faces the possibility of escaping her struggles for good\, Maren must choose just what kind of future she wants to build. \n  \n\n \n\nBren McClain is a writer\, who never gave up. Homemaker Sarah Creamer has been left to care for young Emerson Bridge\, the product of an affair between Sarah’s husband and her best friend. But beyond the deep wound of their betrayal\, Sarah is daunted by the prophecy of her mother’s words\, seared in her memory since childhood: “You ain’t got you one good mama bone in you\, girl.” When Sarah finds Emerson a steer to compete at an upcoming cattle show\, the young calf cries in distress on her farm. Miles away\, his mother breaks out of a barbed-wire fence to find him. When Sarah finds the young steer contently nursing a large cow\, her education in motherhood begins. \nBut Luther Dobbins is desperate to regain his championship cattle dynasty\, and he will stop at nothing to win. Emboldened by her budding mama bone\, Sarah is committed to victory even after she learns the winning steer’s ultimate fate. Will she too stop at nothing\, even if it means betraying her teacher? Then a long-lost photograph appears in a national magazine\, and she is forced to relive the terrible day her husband died in the collapse of the World Trade Towers…the same day a stranger reached out and saved her. SUMMARY:Secrets of the Sprakkar: an Exclusive Virtual Adventure with Eliza Reid\, the First Lady of Iceland
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nCan you imagine living in a gender-equal world? If so\, you may be intrigued by Iceland which\, for the past twelve years\, has been ranked by the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report as number one on its list of countries closing the gap in equality between men and women. What is it about Iceland that makes many women’s experiences there so positive? \nWell\, Eliza Reid knows a thing or two about that. As First Lady of Iceland\, she has delved into what a more gender-equal world would look like\, and why it’s worth striving for. In her new book\, Secrets of the Sprakkar (“extraordinary women”)\, she examines her adopted homeland’s attitude toward women—the deep-seated cultural sense of fairness\, the influence of current and historical role models\, and\, crucially\, the areas where Iceland still has room for improvement. \nWe invite you to join us for a very special Adventure\, where you can chat live with this extraordinary First Lady of Iceland about her new book\, Secrets of the Sprakkar. Grab a glass of wine or hot cocoa\, curl up in your favorite chair\, and get ready to chat live with Eliza to discuss her book\, ask questions\, and converse live “on stage.” \nTo join our virtual event on the exciting new storytelling platform\, Fireside\, simply purchase a book below and we will send you a private VIP link to attend the virtual event. If you have an iPhone or iPad\, you can be part of the virtual audience to chat live with Patti. With other devices\, you can still listen live to the broadcast. \nYour Adventure includes a hardcover copy of Secrets of the Sprakkar\, tax\, shipping within the U.S. and Canada\, a live Fireside chat with Eliza\, Q&A\, and the opportunity to experience the pre-launch of Eliza’s fascinating book. \n\nAbout the Author and Book\nEliza Reid\, the First Lady of Iceland\, was born in 1976 in Ottawa\, Canada. She moved to Iceland in 2003. Madame Reid holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations from Trinity College\, University of Toronto\, where she held the position of Head of College in her final year. She holds a Master of Studies degree in modern history from St. Antony’s College\, Oxford University. She speaks French and Icelandic. \nMadame Reid is  co-founder of the acclaimed Iceland Writers Retreat\, an annual event that combines small-group writing workshops with cultural tours to introduce visitors to Iceland’s unique literary heritage. In this capacity\, she has been active in helping to promote Icelandic writers and literary heritage abroad\, especially in North America. \nShe also served on the jury of the 2018 BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction\, one of Canada’s largest literary prizes. She was previously an editor for Icelandair’s in-flight magazine\, a staff writer at Iceland Review\, and has been published in Monocle\, The Globe and Mail\, and several other newspapers and magazines. Prior to becoming First Lady\, Madame Reid was also a frequent commentator on Icelandic current affairs for foreign media. \nIn her book\, Secrets of the Sprakkar: Iceland’s Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing the World\, Reid charts her personal journey from a Canadian farm to Iceland’s Presidential Residence and along the way proves to be the best possible guide to the historical\, geographical and cultural factors that helped women thrive and built a vibrant modern society. \nReid’s own experience as an immigrant from small-town Canada who never expected to become the first lady is expertly interwoven with interviews with dozens of sprakkar (“extraordinary women”) to form the backbone of an illuminating discussion of what it means to move through the world as a woman\, and how the rules of society play more of a role in who we view as “equal” than we may understand. Secrets of the Sprakkar is a powerful and atmospheric portrait of a tiny country that could lead the way forward for us all. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Fireside\nWe are thrilled to announce that Adventures by the Book has been invited to host a literary series on Fireside which will include book discussions\, author talks\, book clubs\, special presentations\, and much more. SUMMARY:Holiday Cheer at the Spreckels Mansion: an in-person Adventure with award-winning author Sandra Bonura
DESCRIPTION:About the Live\, In-Person\, Adventure\nNOTE: This event is SOLD OUT and now accepting a waitlist. Please email events@adventuresbythebook.com if you wish to join the waitlist.  \n\nGerman immigrant Claus Spreckels may not have been THE Santa Claus\, but San Diegans have been grateful for the gifts his son John bestowed on our beloved city nearly 135 years ago when he almost single-handedly transformed the bankrupt village of San Diego into the thriving city it is today. \nSo the holiday season seems the most fitting time to learn a bit more about John D. Spreckels whom surprisingly few people know about. Join award-winning author Sandra Bonura in the Music Room of the former Spreckels mansion in Coronado\, now known as the Glorietta Bay Inn\, as she discusses her latest book\, Empire Builder: John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego for a behind-the-scenes look into the Spreckels family and its role in business and into the man himself. \n*Your Adventure includes an afternoon at the Glorietta Bay Inn\, a hardcover copy of Empire Builder\, a brief tour of the former mansion\, a glass of wine (or two)\, light snacks\, tax\, gratuity\, author presentation\, book signing\, and the opportunity to engage in meaningful and intimate conversation with Sandra. And\, if time permits\, Sandra may escort us across the street to the Hotel del Coronado to enjoy their beautiful holiday decor as well. \n*Due to the special nature of this event\, only the first 20 people to register are guaranteed a spot\, so make sure to reserve your space quickly. \n\nAbout the Author and Book\nSandra Bonura lives in Southern California and teaches in higher education. She is deeply interested in education\, California (particularly San Diego)\, and Hawaiian history; when they merge\, there is instant engagement. \nHer five published works are Empire Builder: John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego\, Light in The Queen’s Garden: Ida May Pope\, Pioneer for Hawai’i’s Daughters\, “Queen Lili’uokalani’s Beloved Kawaiaha’o Seminary”\, “Lydia K. Aholo—Her Story\, Recovering the Lost Voice\,” and An American Girl in the Hawaiian Islands: The Letters of Carrie Prudence Winter. \nSandee is a frequent storyteller and lecturer on the importance of using a multitude of primary sources to gain perspectives on historical events. To that end\, she provided a unique viewpoint in a documentary about Queen Lili`uokalani and her involvement in the education of Hawaiian children in the 19th century. \nIn her new book\, Empire Builder: John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego\, Sandra reveals the man behind the city. Like many native San Diegans who came before and after her\, Sandra Bonura grew up in the world John D. Spreckels built. Bonura’s mother worked on Coronado Island\, where — at one time or another during his late 19th- and early 20th-century heyday — Spreckels had owned North Island\, the San Diego-Coronado Ferry System\, the Coronado Beach Company\, and the Hotel Del Coronado. \nAs a girl\, Bonura often spent weekends with her grandmother at the Hotel Metropole boarding house\, where she could see the marquee of the grand Spreckels Theater from the lobby window. From her grandmother’s second-floor room\, Bonura had a fine view of what used to be D Street\, which Spreckels renamed Broadway and developed into a thoroughfare worthy of six of his own buildings. \nBut before he was the man who gave San Diego electric streetcars\, its first skyscraper and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion\, John D. Spreckels was the son of a hardworking German immigrant\, a rebellious son who left the family’s booming sugar business to make his mark on a nowhere town that he loved at first sight. \nIt was that John D. Spreckels — the man with the humble German roots and the immigrant work ethic — who convinced author Bonura that the story of the other John D. Spreckels — the powerful\, ambitious man who put San Diego on multiple maps — was a tale she could tell.\nWith her new book\, Bonura hopes to do justice to both of them. \n\nAbout the Glorietta Bay Inn\n\n\nThe Glorietta Bay Inn is a historic landmark in Coronado and famous for its grandeur architecture\, built-in 1908 as the home of sugar baron John D. Spreckels. The Inn has built a reputation of providing friendly efficient service combined with comfort and charm that has guests returning all year for a memorable stay.

Linda had to rebuild her life as she learned to walk with prostheses and devised new ways to perform the activities of daily living. \nA year later she moved back to Los Angeles where she lived independently\, gave birth to her first child\, and finished her Radiology training. She had an illustrious thirty-year career as a Professor of Radiology at the University of California\, San Diego where she was the Director of Breast Imaging and the recipient of many teaching awards. With help from teams of friends and family\, Linda and her husband Dave raised their two children to canoe\, kayak\, backpack\, raft and travel in remote places. \nDetailing her experience in her new memoir\, Gone\, Linda explains how Dave and she were young doctors whose story had all the makings of a fairy tale. But then\, while they were vacationing in Germany\, a train hit their van\, shattering their lives―and Linda’s body. When Linda saw Dave for the first time after losing her right arm and both of her legs\, she told him she would understand if he left. His response: “I didn’t marry your arms or your legs. If you can do it\, I can do it.” \nIn order to protect their loved ones\, they decided to hide the truth about what really happened on those train tracks\, and they kept their secret for thirty-five years. As a triple amputee\, Linda learned to walk with prostheses and change diapers and insert IVs with one hand. She finished her residency while pregnant and living on her own. And she and Dave went on to pursue their dream careers\, raise two children\, and travel the world. \nGone asks readers to find not only courage but also laughter in the unexpected challenges we all face. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Fireside\nWe are thrilled to announce that Adventures by the Book has been invited to host a literary series on Fireside which will include book discussions\, author talks\, book clubs\, special presentations\, and much more. Not even carolers or Christmas cookies can cheer her up–but Lindy’s mother\, Ellen\, remembers an old tradition that might lift her daughter’s spirits. \nReading through a box of childhood letters to Santa and reminiscing about what she’d wished for as a young girl may be just the inspiration Lindy needs. With Ellen’s encouragement\, she decides to write a new letter–not to Santa\, but to herself. Little does Lindy know that this exercise in gratitude will cause her wishes to unfold before her in miraculous ways. While life in Australia is punishing and often brutally unfair\, it is also\, for some\, an opportunity: for redemption\, for a new way of life\, for unimagined freedom. Told in exquisite detail and incisive prose\, The Exiles is a story of grace born from hardship\, the unbreakable bonds of female friendships\, and the unfettering of legacy.captures the hardship\, oppression\, opportunity and hope of a trio of women’s lives—two English convicts and an orphaned Aboriginal girl — in nineteenth-century Australia. \nAbout the Moderator\nHeather Morris is the New York Times and international bestselling author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka’s Journey. Born in New Zealand\, she now lives in Australia\, so as a Aussie and fellow international bestselling author\, we couldn’t think of a better moderator for our event. \nAfter majoring in Political Science\, Heather worked in the Social Work Department while raising her three children. During this time\, she also became a competitive athlete enjoying shot-put\, discus\, javelin\, and hammer throwing. Her passion for storytelling compelled her to enroll in The Professional Scriptwriting Course through the Australian College of Journalism\, after which she attended screenwriting courses\, seminars and workshops\, especially enjoying heroic storylines\, several of which she adapted into screenplays. \nAnd then she met Lale Sokolov\, the inspiration behind the blockbuster sensations The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka’s Journey\, who was transported to Auschwitz and put to work in the privileged position of Tätowierer – the tattooist – to mark his fellow prisoners\, forever. One of them is a young woman\, Gita\, who steals his heart at first glance\, and their friend\, Cilka. Heather’s recounting of their heartbreaking\, true stories is illuminating and unforgettable. \n\n  \n\nAbout Vintage Longbottom and Featured Wine\n \nHailing from New Zealand’s famous Marlborough region\, wine has been one of Kim Longbottom’s life-long passions – and one she shared with her late husband Mark\, a third-generation pastoralist with a natural affinity for the land. Forced to take shelter from the unrelenting onslaught of German shellfire above\, the bravest among them venture out to pluck sweet grapes for the harvest. But wine is not the only secret preserved in the cool\, dark cellars… \nIn present day\, Rosalyn travels to Champagne to select vintages for her Napa-based employer. Rosalyn doesn’t much care for champagne—or France\, for that matter. Since the untimely death of her young husband\, Rosalyn finds it a challenge to enjoy anything at all. But as she reads through a precious cache of WWI letters and retraces the lives lived in the limestone tunnels\, Rosalyn will unravel a mystery hidden for decades… and find a way to savor her own life again\, inspired by the hope and defiance of the women who toiled to bring in the grape harvest during the war. \nAbout Eclipse Chocolate Bar\nSince 2004\, award-winning Chef William Gustwiller & his talented team have been committed to complex flavors in elegant forms\, with warm & friendly service.
