SUMMARY:The Bohemians: A 1920's Jazz Age Virtual Adventure
DESCRIPTION:About the Virtual Event\nDig out your vintage clothing and travel back with New York Times bestselling author Jasmin Darznik to glittering and gritty 1920s San Francisco\, as she discusses her new book\, The Bohemians. Meet iconic photographer Dorothea Lange at a time when she wasn’t yet an icon\, but rather a young woman finding her way forward through life\, along with a cast of unforgettable characters like Mabel Dodge Luhan\, Frida Kahlo\, Ansel Adams\, and D.H. Lawrence. \nYour Adventure includes an autographed hardcover book\, interactive book discussion (via Zoom)\, Q&A\, powerpoint presentation by the author\, and a special added bonus (available only to our Adventurers) to be shared with you during the event! \n  \nAbout the Author and Book\nJasmin Darznik is the New York Times) bestselling author of The Bohemians\, a novel that imagines the friendship between photographer Dorothea Lange and her Chinese American assistant in 1920s San Francisco. Her debut novel\, Song of a Captive Bird\, was a New York Times Book Review “Editors’ Choice” book and a Los Angeles Times bestseller. Darznik is also the author of The Good Daughter: A Memoir of My Mother’s Hidden Life. Her books have been published in seventeen countries and her essays have appeared in the New York Times\, Washington Post\, and Los Angeles Times\, among others. \nDarznik was born in Iran and came to America when she was five years old. She holds an MFA in fiction from Bennington College\, a J.D. from the University of California\, and a Ph.D. in English from Princeton University. Now a professor of English and creative writing at California College of the Arts\, she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her family. \nThe Bohemians features a young and bright-eyed Dorothea Lange as she arrives in San Francisco in 1918\, where a disaster kick-starts a new life. Her friendship with Caroline Lee\, a vivacious\, straight-talking Chinese American with a complicated past\, gives Dorothea entrée into Monkey Block\, an artists’ colony and the bohemian heart of the city. Dazzled by Caroline and her friends\, Dorothea is catapulted into a heady new world of freedom\, art\, and politics. She also finds herself unexpectedly falling in love with the brilliant but troubled painter Maynard Dixon. Dorothea and Caroline eventually create a flourishing portrait studio\, but a devastating betrayal pushes their friendship to the breaking point and alters the course of their lives. \nThe Bohemians captures a glittering and gritty 1920s San Francisco\, with a cast of unforgettable characters\, including cameos from such legendary figures as Mabel Dodge Luhan\, Frida Kahlo\, Ansel Adams\, and D.H. Lawrence. A vivid and absorbing portrait of the past\, it is also eerily resonant with contemporary themes\, as anti-immigration sentiment\, corrupt politicians\, and a devastating pandemic bring tumult to the city—and the gift of friendship and the possibility of self-invention persist against the ferocious pull of history. \nAs Dorothea sheds her innocence\, her purpose is awakened and she grows into the artist who would create pictures—like her iconic Depression-era photograph\, Migrant Mother—that would break the hearts and open the eyes of a nation. \n

San Francisco widower Martin Hocking proves to be as aloof as he is mesmerizingly handsome. Sophie quickly develops deep affection for Kat\, Martin’s silent five-year-old daughter\, but Martin’s odd behavior leaves her with the uneasy feeling that something about her newfound situation isn’t right. \nThen one early-spring evening\, a stranger at the door sets in motion a transforming chain of events. Sophie discovers hidden ties to two other women. The first\, pretty and pregnant\, is standing on her doorstep. The second is hundreds of miles away in the American Southwest\, grieving the loss of everything she once loved. \nThe fates of these three women intertwine on the eve of the devastating earthquake\, thrusting them onto a perilous journey that will test their resiliency and resolve and\, ultimately\, their belief that love can overcome fear. Here is a novel about the bonds of friendship and mother love\, and the power of female solidarity…

We are so excited about the idea that we are inviting you to join not one\, not two\, but three talented authors for a fun evening that is sure to brighten up your Monday evening. \nFeast on a delicious Mexican dinner at El Torito\, with critically acclaimed authors Kaira Rouda\, Eldonna Edwards\, and Wendy Heard\, as they share their mysterious stories of ideal Californian communities and revelations. What are people truly capable of? What are the power of secrets that can completely twist\, bend\, and complicate a happy life? Get ready for “more twists than a foot-long cork screw!” \nYour Adventure includes a delicious taco bar including cheese enchiladas\, refried beans\, rice\, sweet corn cake\, house-made salsa\, crisp tortilla chips\, Mexican caesar salad\, soft beverage\, traditional flan\, tax\, gratuity\, author presentation\, Q&A\, book signing\, and the chance to meet the authors up-close and personal in a fun and intimate setting. \n\nAbout the Authors\n \nKaira Sturdivant Rouda is an accomplished business leader\, entrepreneur\, national speaker and internationally bestselling and award-winning author. A former magazine editor\, and society columnist\, Kaira won the Stevie Award for Women in Business for creating the first female-focused residential real estate brand\, Real Living\, and growing the brand to more than 22 states before its sale to Berkshire Hathaway. Her first book\, Real You Incorporated: 8 Essentials for Women Entrepreneurs\, led to a national speaking tour where she inspired thousands. \nTurning to a full-time writing career\, her most recent works are Best Day Ever and The Favorite Daughter. Active in the areas of homelessness\, food security\, and empowering women and girls\, in her twenties\, as a volunteer\, she created the first walk-in emergency shelter for homeless families in Central Ohio. Kaira has received numerous awards for her community service\, including the national Kiwanis Service to Mankind Award\, among many others. She lives in Southern California with her husband\, Congressman Harley Rouda\, and her four twenty-something children. \n\n \nEldonna Edwardsis a beloved writing instructor\, keynote speaker and former creative journaling facilitator\, who grew up in a large family nestled between cornfields and churches in the provincial Midwest\, an upbringing that provided a fertile background from which to harvest setting and characters. The voice in her best-selling debut novel  This I Know comes straight from the heart. This I Know won over the hearts and minds of readers everywhere and was a Delilah Book Club selection. \nIn her new novel\, Clover Blue\, Eldonna once again explores themes of otherness and belonging\, and the true definition of home. She is also the subject of the award-winning documentary “Perfect Strangers” that follows one kidney patient and one potential kidney donor in their search for a possible match. Her memoir Lost in Transplanation also chronicles this life-changing decision. \n \nWendy Heard was born in San Francisco but has lived most of her life in Los Angeles\, which is on fire\nmore than she would honestly prefer. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art\, emphasizing painting\, and a Master’s degree in Education. \nWhen not writing\, she can be found hiking\, taking the Metro and then questioning this decision\, haunting local bookstores\, and\, apparently\, writing about herself in the third person. \nPet peeves as a native Angeleno include traffic and traffic-related driving infractions. Summoning spell is the word “caffeine” spoken three times in front of a darkened mirror while holding a red candle. Described unforgettably by a friend as “a chipper Wednesday Addams.” \nFor Book Clubs:\n \nAre you in a book club\, seeking fabulous authors who are excited and available to meet with you? All three of these books are quirky\, charming\, and perfect for a fun book club chat and girls’ night out. \nEnjoy a delicious breakfast-for-dinner meal and admission to this private event where you’ll have the opportunity to meet Abbi\, Kristin\, and Kathy in a fun and intimate setting. And we know it’s tough to choose only one book\, but great news – you don’t need to\, because for a limited time (online only)\, you can pre-order all three books for only $30!  That’s right – because we’re so excited for this fun event that we’re offering you an AMAZING price on book packages! Raising the “bar” is BR’s rotating list of 20 beers on tap\, which are available as samplers to complement many of the unique dishes they serve. \n\nAbout the Authors\nAbbi Waxman was born in England in 1970\, the oldest child of two copywriters who never should have been together in the first place. Once her father ran off to buy cigarettes and never came back\, her mother began a highly successful career writing crime fiction. She encouraged Abbi and her sister Emily to read anything and everything they could pull down from the shelves\, and they did. \nNaturally lazy and disinclined to dress up\, Abbi went into advertising\, working as a copywriter and then a creative director at various advertising agencies in London and New York. Clients ranged from big and traditional\, (AT&T\, Chase Manhattan Bank\, IBM\, American Express\, Unilever\, Mercedes-Benz) to big and morally corrupt (R. J. Reynolds) to big and larcenous (Enron). Eventually she quit advertising\, had three kids and started writing books\, TV shows and screenplays\, largely in order to get a moment’s peace. \nAbbi lives in Los Angeles with her husband\, three kids\, three dogs\, three cats\, a gecko\, two mice and six chickens. Every one of these additions made sense at the time\, it’s only in retrospect that it seems foolhardy. \n  \nKristin Rockaway is a native New Yorker and recovering corporate software engineer. After working in the IT industry for far too many years\, she finally traded the city for the surf and chased her dreams out to Southern California\, where she spends her days happily writing stories instead of code. When she’s not working\, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son\, browsing the aisles of her neighborhood bookstores\, and planning her next big vacation. \nHer second novel\, How to Hack a Heartbreak\, will be released from Graydon House/HarperCollins on July 30\, 2019. Her debut\, The Wild Women’s Guide to Traveling the World\, is in stores now. \n\n  \n  \n  \nKathy Cooperman spent four years performing improvisational comedy\, then decided to do something less fun with her life. \nAfter graduating from Yale Law School\, she went into criminal law\, defending “innocent” (rich) clients. These days\, she lives in Del Mar\, California\, with her husband and four challenging young children. Crimes Against a Book Club is her first novel. \n  \n\nFor Book Clubs\nAre you in a book club\, seeking fabulous authors who are excited and available to meet with you? Then you will be delighted to know that  Abbi Waxman\, Kristin Rockaway\, and Kathy Cooperman are three of our newest NovelNetwork authors\, available to meet with book clubs via video chat. \nNovelNetwork is the nation’s first and only match(dot)com for authors and book clubs to find each other\, so check it out today. Nell is planning her dream wedding to her wonderful fiance with one catch: her divorced parents can’t stand each other and threaten to no-show if the other is there. Add to that Felicity’s race against the clock to create a special gown for a prestigious bridal salon\, and what both girls need is a Christmas miracle. It’s about love and forgiveness\, and creating one’s own miracles during the most festive time of year. \nSave
