SUMMARY:Eastern Sierras Writer's Retreat: a Nature Lover's Adventure with LA Times Bestselling Author\, Writing Instructor\, and Baker Amy Wallen
DESCRIPTION:About the Retreat\nClose your eyes and imagine yourself sitting amidst a grove of stunning aspen trees\, quaking in the mountain breeze and turning golden right before your very eyes. Now imagine that setting is creekside\, allowing you to hear the rushing water echo off the majestic California Eastern Sierra Mountains\, with perhaps deer or other wildlife sauntering only feet from you. Now\, open your eyes\, because that dream is about to become reality for only 4-6 lucky writing Adventurers. \nWhether you are an aspiring writer\, a debut author\, or an experienced bestseller\, this intimate retreat will help stimulate your writing life with fresh mountain air as you spend 4 nights/3 days in a private mountain home at an elevation of 8\,500 feet\, in beautiful and secluded Aspendell\, California\, enveloped in writing\, mentoring\, camaraderie\, and eating pie with an intimate group of fellow writers and AMY WALLEN\, author most recently of How to Write a Novel in 20 Pies: Sweet and Savory Secrets for Surviving the Writing Life. \nThis retreat is ideal for writers of any level who want to open up their writing through their senses. If you are writing a novel\, memoir\, essays\, or stories\, and want to learn about starting or invigorating a writing life through rigorous discussion\, supportive feedback\, intimate conversations in a gorgeous and delicious environment\, this retreat will provide craft lessons\, critique\, Q&A\, with time and space to do just that. \nWriting is difficult\, so why not make the writing life delectable? Hiking\, sitting still in nature\, breathing in fresh air\, communing with friends\, eating and imbibing – these are all part of the writing life\, whether to mull a scene or to stir up memories. But to have a writing life\, first we must write. And\, write we will. \n \nDaily Schedule\nYour days will start with a light and delicious breakfast prepared for you. Enjoy it on the deck amidst golden aspen trees as you listen to the rushing water and watch the stellar jays\, or eat with your fellow writers. The mornings will include craft sessions and individual meetings. We will lunch together\, then again have free time to write\, wander\, photograph the changing aspen leaves\, or prepare for the workshop. In the afternoon\, we’ll meet for workshops where we will critique each other’s work\, offering guided and constructive feedback. \nEach day will include a 1-hour workshop on 1-2 submissions\, and a 1 to 1-1/2 hour craft session delving into character\, sensory imagery\, and emotional arc – elements that love to show up in a peaceful setting – through your pen on the page. Through the gorgeous setting\, the tranquil environment\, the intimacy of only 4-6 participants\, and delicious\, nourishing meals\, all your senses will be ripe for stories. You will have time on your own to write more\, as well as individual meetings with the instructor. \nOne afternoon\, we will go on a light hike through a magical hallway of aspen trees to admire their changing colors. One day\, in the kitchen with Amy\, we will make our own pie and learn how to let go and eat our mistakes. Over pie\, we may share our dreams and how to make them reality. What does pie have to do with writing? Everything! Comfort food stirs up memories\, taste buds trigger happiness and\, best of all\, pie is a reward for perseverance. \nIn the evenings\, we will enjoy a relaxing glass of wine while we discuss publishing\, writing goals\, how to stay focused on the writing life back home\, and learn to celebrate our successes. We will have dinners together\, sometimes a savory pie\, afterwards\, a leisurely conversation over dessert pie\, or you may choose to retire early and read or write. Some nights you’ll read bedtime stories. \nWhether writing creative nonfiction or fiction\, at the end of the retreat\, you’ll take home the utensils to keep your pen moving. Her novels have garnered more than two dozen prestigious awards and nominations\, most notably the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, RWA’s RITA® Award\, and a Goodreads Choice Award for Best Historical Fiction. \nHer new historical novel\, The Girls of Good Fortune\, is set to publish May 20\, 2025. \nShe came from a lineage known for good fortune…\nby those who don’t know the whole story. \nOregon\, 1888. Amid the subterranean labyrinth of the notorious Shanghai Tunnels\, a woman awakens in an underground cell\, drugged and disguised. Celia soon realizes she’s a “shanghaied” victim on the verge of being shipped off as forced labor\, leaving behind those she loves most. Although well accustomed to adapting for survival—being half-Chinese\, passing as white during an era fraught with anti-Chinese sentiment—she fears that far more than her own fate hangs in the balance. \nAs she pieces together the twisting path that led to her abduction\, from serving as a maid for the family of a dubious mayor to becoming entwined in the case of a gold miners’ massacre\, revelations emerge of a child left in peril. Desperate\, Celia must find a way to escape and return to a place where unearthed secrets could prove deadlier than the dark recesses of Chinatown. \nA captivating tale of resilience and hope\, The Girls of Good Fortune explores the complexity of family and identity\, the importance of stories that echo through generations\, and the power of strength found beneath the surface. \nTo schedule a book club visit with Kristina or any of our authors on Adventures by the Book® (formerly NovelNetwork®): \n\n\nConnect with this Author on Adventures by the Book® (formerly NovelNetwork®)\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Shanghai Tunnels of Portland\n \nDespite essentially raised as an Oregon native\, Kristina discovered only a dozen years ago about the existence of Portland’s mysterious Shanghai Tunnels. After her subsequent tour\, the underground labyrinth periodically tugged at her mind as a setting ripe for a novel. \nEventually\, further inspired by a photography book featuring “hapas” (a fond Hawaiian term for half-Asians\, like her) and a marathon brainstorming session with a tremendously patient author pal\, a story idea began to take shape. But only after a beloved history-buff friend asked if she was familiar with Oregon’s Hells Canyon Massacre\, thereby launching her down a research rabbit hole involving the shocking\, long-buried atrocity from the late 1800s\, did she solidify her novel’s premise. \nThe final result is a tale that explores the complexity of family and identity\, the struggles and beauty of interwoven cultures\, and the transcendent power of storytelling. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor Book Clubs\, Libraries\, or Live Author Chats\n\n\n\n\n\n \nAre you in a book club\, library reading group\, or are your group of friends\, colleagues\, and family members seeking fabulous authors who are excited and available to meet with you? Scott Fitzgerald Award.  In 2013\, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama. \nIn 2024\, she was the subject of an American Masters documentary\, “Julia Alvarez: A Life Reimagined\,” on PBS. Alvarez is one of the founders of Border of Lights\, a movement to promote peace and collaboration between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  She lives in Vermont. \nIn her most recent novel\, The Cemetery of Untold Stories\, returns with a luminescent novel about storytelling that reads like an instant classic. Alma Cruz\, the celebrated writer at the heart of the book\, doesn’t want to end up like her friend\, a novelist who fought so long and hard to finish a book that it threatened her sanity. So when Alma inherits a small plot of land in the Dominican Republic\, her homeland\, she has the beautiful idea of turning it into a place to bury her untold stories—literally. She creates a graveyard for the manuscript drafts and the characters whose lives she tried and failed to bring to life and who still haunt her. \nAlma wants her characters to rest in peace. But they have other ideas and soon begin to defy their author: they talk back to her and talk to one another behind her back\, rewriting and revising themselves. \nThe Cemetery of Untold Stories asks: Whose stories get to be told\, and whose buried? Finally\, Alma finds the meaning she and her characters yearn for in the everlasting vitality of stories. Julia Alvarez reminds us that the stories of our lives are never truly finished\, even at the end. \nAbout the Carlsbad City Library\n\n\nCarlsbad City Library provides community members of all ages with convenient access to high-quality resources and services to inform and enrich individual and community life. Carlsbad City Library is the destination for information\, enjoyment of reading\, lifelong learning\, and cultural enrichment for those who live\, work and play in Carlsbad.

There’s no need to talk\, because the truth of what one says lies in what one does.”\n― Bernhard Schlink\, The Reader \nNew York Times and internationally bestselling German author Bernhard Schlink stormed onto the U.S. literary scene when his book The Reader (1997) was selected as an Oprah pick and made into an Oscar-winning film featuring Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet.
