Adventures by the Book is pleased to partner with the Carlsbad City Library for a Free Library Adventure with beloved San Diego author, Susan Meissner.

Join us we celebrate Susan’s most anticipated novel yet, As Bright as Heaven, the compelling story of a mother and her daughters who find themselves in a harsh world not of their making, which will either crush their resolve to survive or purify it.

With her signature impeccable research skills, Susan uncovers yet another rarely-explored part of history: the 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic. As the centennial year of the deadliest pandemic in human history comes to pass, join Susan in remembering the effect of loss through the eyes of one American family in Philadelphia, where 12,000 victims were claimed. During this author talk Susan will not only explore the devastation the world felt in the midst of the Epidemic, but also the incredible strength that this kind of horror brings about in women & mothers when they must do whatever it takes to protect their families.

This free Adventure includes a book discussion, Q&A, book signing, and the opportunity to meet the author up close and personal.

About the Author

Susan Meissner is a multi-published author, speaker and writing workshop leader with a background in community journalism. Her novels include A Bridge Across the Ocean; Secrets of  Charmed Life, a Goodreads finalist for Best Historical Fiction 2015; and A Fall of Marigolds, named to Booklist’s Top Ten Women’s Fiction titles for 2014. A California native, she attended Point Loma Nazarene University. Susan is a pastor’s wife and a mother of four young adults. When she’s not working on a novel, Susan writes small group curriculum for her San Diego church.

As Bright As Heaven: In 1918, Philadelphia was a city teeming with promise. As the pandemic claims more than twelve thousand victims in their adopted city, they find their lives left with a world that looks nothing like the one they knew. But even as they lose loved ones, they take in a baby orphaned by the disease who becomes their single source of hope. Amidst the tragedy and challenges, they learn what they cannot live without–and what they are willing to do about it.
