Fall Back in Time: A Happy Hour Adventure

November 3, 2019 @ 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

$16.64 – $49.59

About the Event

It’s that time of year again – time to turn your clocks back one hour to gain an extra hour of sleep in anticipation of cooler weather perfect for curling up with a good book. And what better way to fall back in time, to the mid-1960’s and the mid-1940’s, than by diving into not one, not two, but three fascinating works of historical fiction just perfect to add to your fall reading list.

Please join us as we welcome bestselling and perennial book club favorite authors Renee Rosen and Susan Meissner, as well as debut historical novelist Georgie Blalock, at our fun Fall Back in Time Happy Hour Adventure at Morgan Run County Club. As the authors discuss their respective books, Park Avenue Summer (a Mad Men meets Devil Wears Prada exploration into the glamorous New York City of 1965 and Cosmopolitan magazine),The Last Year of the War, (an American girl’s life changes forever when her German immigrant parents are interned in a WWII Texas internment camp), and The Other Windsor Girl (the outrageous lifestyle of Princess Margaret conflicts with her place as Queen Elizabeth’s younger sister), enjoy a cosmopolitan cocktail, heavy appetizers, and a great afternoon of book discussion.

Your Adventure includes a happy hour spread of heavy appetizers, a cosmopolitan cocktail that would make Helen Gurley Brown and Princess Margaret smile, tax, gratuity, author presentation, book signing, and the opportunity to engage in meaningful and intimate conversation with all three authors.

About the Authors

Renee Rosen is the bestselling author of historical fiction, including Windy City Blues, White Collar Girl, What the Lady Wants, and Dollface, as well as the young adult novel, Every Crooked Pot.

In Park Avenue Summer (Berkley Publishing), New York City is filled with opportunities for single girls like Alice Weiss, who leaves her small midwestern town to chase her big-city dreams and unexpectedly lands the job of a lifetime working for the first female editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, Helen Gurley Brown. Nothing could have prepared Alice for the world she enters, and as pressure mounts at the magazine, Alice struggles to not lose sight of her own dreams as she’s swept up into this glamorous world. Because if Helen Gurley Brown has taught her anything, it’s that a woman can demand to have it all.

Renee frequently visits with book clubs and is available for video chats as well as in-person visits when her schedule and the geography align, thru NovelNetwork, a free to join service for book clubs to connect with their favorite book club authors.

Susan Meissner is a USA Today bestselling author of historical fiction with more than half a million books in print in fifteen languages. She is an author, speaker and writing workshop leader, with a background in community journalism. Her novels include As Bright as Heaven, starred review in Library Journal; Secrets of  Charmed Life, a Goodreads finalist for Best Historical Fiction 2015; and A Fall of Marigolds, named to Booklist’s Top Ten Women’s Fiction titles for 2014

In The Last Year of the War (Berkley Publishing), Elise Sontag is living a typical Iowa fourteen-year-old life, until her German immigrant father, a legal U.S. resident for nearly two decades, is suddenly arrested on suspicion of being a Nazi sympathizer. The family is sent to an internment camp in Texas, where, behind the armed guards and barbed wire, Elise feels stripped of her very identity, until she meets fellow internee Mariko Inoue, a Japanese-American teenager from Los Angeles, who challenges Elise to hold on to the belief the life she knew before the war will again be hers.

Susan also frequently visits with book clubs and is available for video chats as well as in-person visits when her schedule and the geography align, thru NovelNetwork, a free to join service for book clubs to connect with their favorite book club authors.

Georgie Blalock is is an amateur historian and movie buff who loves combining her different passions through historical fiction, and a healthy dose of period piece films. When not writing, she can be found prowling the non-fiction history section of the library or the British film listings on Netflix. Georgie writes historical romance under the name Georgie Lee.

In her debut historical fiction novel, The Other Windsor Girl, set in dreary, post-war Britain, Princess Margaret captivates everyone with her cutting edge fashion sense and biting quips. The royal socialite, cigarette holder in one hand, cocktail in the other, sparkles in the company of her glittering entourage of wealthy young aristocrats known as the Margaret Set, but her outrageous lifestyle conflicts with her place as Queen Elizabeth’s younger sister. Can she be a dutiful princess while still dazzling the world on her own terms?

Post-war Britain isn’t glamorous for The Honorable Vera Strathmore. While writing scandalous novels, she dreams of living and working in New York, and regaining the happiness she enjoyed before her fiancé was killed in the war. A chance meeting with the Princess changes her life forever. But while Margaret, as a member of the Royal Family, is not free to act on her desires, Vera soon wants the freedom to pursue her own dreams. As time and Princess Margaret’s scandalous behavior progress, both women will be forced to choose between status, duty, and love…
