Penguins & Patagonia Adventure

October 29, 2018 - November 6, 2018

About the Adventure

Join us for an Adventure unlike any other through the majestic land of Patagonia with award winning author, Midge Raymond, as she immerses us in the research she did with Magellanic penguins that helped inspire her novel, My Last Continent.

Midge volunteered at the Punta Tombo penguin colony in Argentina, where she helped with a penguin census of the largest Magellanic penguin colony in the world. Her work was alongside Dr. Dee Boersma of the University of Washington and her team to help count penguins and eggs at this colony of 200,000 breeding pairs. Dr. Boersma has been studying the Magellanic penguins at Punta Tombo for thirty years, and her work & advocacy has been instrumental in protecting the penguins and conserving their habitat in this remote & breathtaking part of the world.

On this spectacular Adventure, you too will have the opportunity to delve into the Nature Reserves of Patagonia with Midge and other penguin conservationist guides. Over 9 incredible days travelers will see and experience wildlife in ways they never imagined, without the strain of extreme physical activity. This Adventure has been specially designed for travelers at most fitness levels, without sacrificing the opportunity to get up-close and personal withthe spectacular creatures of the region.

Beginning in Buenos Aires, Adventurers will fly (as a group, internal flights included!) to Puerto Madryn near where the Punta Tombo penguin colony resides and will be incubating their eggs. We will spend hours with local researchers getting an up-close experience with these amazing birds that not only inspired Midge, but her husband, John Yunker, author of The Tourist Trail, as well.

Our animal-interaction does not stop there though: we will next travel to the UNESCO World Heritage site Peninsula Valdes where penguins, rheas, guanacoes, foxes, sea lions, elephant seals, the occasional orca, and many more stunning creatures reside. Our time in Peninsula Valdes will be savored for three nights spent at Estancia Rincon Chico, an exclusive lodge on the UNESCO site. Guests will experience nature in the most intimate way: listening to burrowing owls close to the lodge, waking to the song of the larks, encountering an endless sky full of stars, and that is all in addition to the awesome boat trip to see the largest population of Southern Right Whales in the world.

With the guidance of the brilliant Midge Raymond and a team of local guides, by the time this unbelievable Adventure ends, travelers will have had the opportunity to experience Penguins & Patagonia in a way few others will ever have the privilege.

BUT WAIT…The Adventure doesn’t have to stop there: after the Patagonian Adventure ends, an optional 11 day Antarctic Extension begins! Inquire for details on this chance to travel further into the setting of My Last Continent and cross Antarctica off your bucket list!
