About the Featured Speakers
Rebecca Bruff writes because she believes that “the stories we read and write and tell have the power to shape and change our lives. I believe that – because a story changed my life.” Seven years ago, when she lived in Texas, she visited the lowcountry. It was her first experience there, so she took a carriage tour through the historic district of Beaufort. That’s when she heard a little bit of the story of a man named Robert Smalls. His story ignited her curiosity, which led to exploration, and exploration led to discovery, a discovery that revealed how little she understood about the experiences of enslaved people in our country.
Her deeply moving and illuminating Trouble the Water reveals the little-known real-life and unlikely story of Robert Smalls. Born enslaved in South Carolina before the Civil War, Smalls witnesses great privilege and immense suffering alongside his owner’s daughter and the dangerous son of a firebrand secessionist. At the age of twelve, he’s sent to work in Charleston, where he loads ships and learns to pilot a cotton steamer. When the war erupts and his cotton steamer becomes a confederate warship, Robert attempts a daring and harrowing escape to freedom for himself and the people he loves, becoming a Civil War hero and paragon of civic leadership.

John Cribb is a New York Times bestselling author who has written about subjects ranging from history to education. His previous work includes coauthoring The American Patriot’s Almanac and The Educated Child; co-editing The Human Odyssey, a 3-volume world history text, and developing online history courses. His writing has been published in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, National Review Online, and several other publications.
His Old Abe is a rare NOVEL of Abraham Lincoln, one that recounts the last five years of his life, the most cataclysmic years of America’s history. We are at Lincoln’s side on every page of this vivid novel as he presses forward amid disaster and comes to life once again fighting to save the country. The story begins in the spring of 1860 in Illinois and follows Lincoln through his election and the calamity of the Civil War to his assassination at the height of power. Amid national and personal tragedy, he struggles to find meaning in the war and bring freedom to Southern slaves. Central to this novel is a love story—the story of Abraham and Mary Lincoln’s sometimes stormy yet devoted marriage. This story portrays Lincoln not only as a flesh-and-blood man, but a hero who embodies his country’s finest ideals. Set amid America’s most devastating tragedy, Old Abe captures the triumphs and defeats of one of the greatest leaders in US history, the one who set a divided country on track to become a great nation.
“This is the best book about Lincoln I’ve ever read.” – William J. Bennett, former U.S. Secretary of Education and author of The Book of Virtues.
