The Refugee Crisis OSHER Lunch Edventure

April 28, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm PDT

$17.99

Due to the Corona virus concerns, SDSU Osher has cancelled this event and hopes to reschedule at a future time.

We invite you to take a look at the refugee crisis in our own city at our next Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Diego State University Edventure, at the International Refugee Committee (IRC) in San Diego. Together with San Diego author Judy Bernstein, students will take a tour of the IRC, enjoy a lunch provided by refugee caterers, and hear Judy’s story of how this suburban mom became partnered with a Sudanese refugee through an IRC mentoring program and how these two individuals from opposite sides of the world took an eye-opening journey that radically altered each other’s vision and lives.

Event includes docent tour of the IRC, lunch, book discussion, Q&A, and the opportunity to meet the author up close and personal in an intimate setting.

About the Author and Book

INineteen-year-old refugee Alephonsion Deng, from war-ravaged Sudan, had great expectations when he arrived in America three weeks before two airlines crashed into the World Trade Towers. Money, he’d been told, was given to you in pillows. Machines did all the work. Education was free.

Suburban mom Judy Bernstein had her own assumptions. The teenaged ”Lost Boys of Sudan” — who’d traveled barefoot and starving for a thousand miles-needed a little mothering and a change of scenery: a trip to the zoo, perhaps, or maybe the beach.

Partnered through an IRC mentoring program in San Diego, these two individuals from opposite sides of the world began an eye-opening journey that radically altered each other’s vision and life.

Disturbed in Their NestsĀ recounts the first year of this heartwarming partnership; the initial misunderstandings, the growing trust, and, ultimately, their lasting friendship. Their contrasting points of view provide of-the-moment insight into what refugees face when torn from their own cultures and thrust into entirely foreign ones.

Event Registration

Registration will be available beginning January 15 at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Diego State University.

Due to the special nature of this Edventure, Osher membership is required and may be obtained at a minimal cost at time of registration; limited spaces are available for this unique experience, so early registration is recommended.
