Meet the Read Between the Wines Book Club: “We meet once monthly with July & August hiatus. We are currently reading The Woman Before Wallis by Bryn Turnbull, and enjoy reading various genres.”

We received a very informative reporting from group manager Kathie following her book club’s recent (inaugural) author visit with Bryn Turnbull:

“Having Toronto-born historical novelist Bryn Turnbull drop by to join eight members of our “Read Between the Wines” Book Club Thurs., February 17 was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and our first time hosting an Author Visit.

Our Book Club began some 25 years ago by friends and neighbours in the Onanole, MB area on the doorstep of magical Riding Mountain National Park (home of the greatest number of black bears in North America!)

Both personable and professional, Bryn discussed interesting details about her four years researching and writing her first historical novel, “The Woman Before Wallis” during our Q & A session. She had our undivided attention sharing information about herself, “the Canadian colonial who liked to play beer pong”, boldly moving to Scotland to attend prestigious St. Andrew’s University, and pen her first historical novel while earning her Master of Letters in Creative Writing. A visual reader and writer, Bryn outlined “her favourite time period, the Deco period, and explosion of culture between the two Wars” with its distinctive clothing and furnishings from plus fours to lush Axminster carpets. She spoke easily about Thelma (and taught us her name was correctly pronounced Tel-ma) who found herself in an arena of great wealth and privilege amongst the Windsors and Vanderbilts, plus her friend, Wallis, a well-documented historical figure, who “jumped out of my pen.”

She also discussed “The Last Grand Duchess”, her most recent work released Feb. 8 which she was pleased to share has just hit the Best Seller list. Additionally, we were privy to information on her third novel, now in progress about art theft and forgery in occupied Paris … and a sneak preview of her fourth novel focused on the construction and fall of the Berlin Wall.

Thank you very much, Bryn for making time in your busy life to speak with us.

We wish you continued success in all future endeavours and look forward to reading more of your impressive work.”

Thank you, Kathie, for sharing with us.
