Good Night, Irene: A Carlsbad City Library Adventure featuring NYT bestselling author Luis Alberto Urrea

July 13 @ 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

About the Live, In-Person, Adventure

“Words are the only bread we can really share.” – Luis Alberto Urrea

…and sharing a feast of words is what masterful storyteller, New York Times bestselling author Luis Alberto Urrea, does best. You won’t want to miss this afternoon as he introduces his newest novel, Good Night, Irene, which highlights the fearless female volunteers who served overseas during World War II and presents a story of “survival, camaraderie, and courage on the front line” (Kristin Hannah).

Join us to explore themes of hope, heartbreak, friendship, trust, and both the consequences and brutalities of war at the Georgina Cole Library.

Registration for this event is not required, as it is free and open to the public. However, copies of Good Night, Irene are available for pre-sale below and will be delivered to the event for signing. Books will also be available for purchase and signing at the event.

PLEASE NOTE VENUE CHANGE: this event will NOT be held at the Dove Library per usual, but will be held at the Georgina Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad.

About the Author and Book

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his landmark work of nonfiction, The Devil’s Highway, now in its thirty-fourth paperback printing, Luis Alberto Urrea is the author of numerous other works of nonfiction, poetry, and fiction, including the national bestsellers The Hummingbird’s Daughter and The House of Broken Angels, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. A recipient of an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, among many other honors, Luis lives outside of Chicago and teaches at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

His newest novel, Good Night, Irene, serves as an affecting and uplifting portrait of friendship and valor in harrowing circumstances. Centered around the bond between two women suddenly thrust into the horrors of World War II, this searing epic based on the magnificent, true story of heroic Red Cross women powerfully demonstrates that Luis’s “gifts as a storyteller are prodigious” (NPR), and has also been praised for being “moving and affecting, [and] featuring characters with whom we cannot help but engage” (Alta Journal).
