“Words are the only bread we can really share.” – Luis Alberto Urrea
…and sharing a feast of words is what masterful storyteller, New York Times bestselling author Luis Alberto Urrea, does best. You won’t want to miss this afternoon as he introduces his newest novel, Good Night, Irene, which highlights the fearless female volunteers who served overseas during World War II and presents a story of “survival, camaraderie, and courage on the front line” (Kristin Hannah).

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his landmark work of nonfiction, The Devil’s Highway, now in its thirty-fourth paperback printing, Luis Alberto Urrea is the author of numerous other works of nonfiction, poetry, and fiction, including the national bestsellers The Hummingbird’s Daughter and The House of Broken Angels, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. A recipient of an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, among many other honors, Luis lives outside of Chicago and teaches at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
His newest novel, Good Night, Irene, serves as an affecting and uplifting portrait of friendship and valor in harrowing circumstances. Centered around the bond between two women suddenly thrust into the horrors of World War II, this searing epic based on the magnificent, true story of heroic Red Cross women powerfully demonstrates that Luis’s “gifts as a storyteller are prodigious” (NPR), and has also been praised for being “moving and affecting, [and] featuring characters with whom we cannot help but engage” (Alta Journal).
