Meet The Finer Things Book Club, described by book club manager Kacey as a group “designed to read and experience the finer things in life. Our goal is to read books that explore all cultures and themes and to follow up these readings with fun activities. We have 10 members who meet once every 2 months in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We enjoy reading all genres.”
Their latest book selection was quite fitting to their group’s mission. Set amongst the scandal, wealth, and upstairs-downstairs politics of a Roman family, Crystal King’s seminal debut, FEAST OF SORROW, features the man who inspired the world’s oldest cookbook and the ambition that led to his destruction.
Of her group’s visit with the author, book club manager Kacey offered this:
“It was splendid being able to speak with Crystal King about her book “Feast of Sorrow” during the discussion today. We did have a few camera difficulties on my end, but Crystal sent us her Zoom account and it all worked out. She gave us some good tidbits about why she decided to write on the topic of Apicius and his Roman cookbook and the research that went into it. She even emailed us an article of one of the ancient Roman spices that was thought to be extinct, but may have recently been rediscovered again! I think all the members truly enjoyed listening to her. I hope in the future we can interview more authors for our club!”
We hope so too, Kacey!
